moose hunting 2010

Snowtrac Nome

member formerly known as dds
my 2010 moose hunt kind of sucked had record breaking rains and record high temps wich i believed kept the mooose down for the 2 week opener. here are some pics of the experiance. we saw a bunch of cow's and this first pic shows how i payed for my room and board while staying at a mining camp good thing i had a dry place to stay the weather was the worst i had seen my 25 inch river cossing came up to 5 feet wich had me stranded in the back country i also shucked teeth one one of my drive sprookets and stripped axle splines on the other axle and some hoow broke a rear hub i'm thinking it picked a ock up in the track during a river crossing all repairs were made in the field with rain comming down.

The "armored" rig is an Alvis Stalwart.

How did you mamage to deal with stripped sprockets and such out there? Have to get creative with parts laying around?

Did you get your moose!?!?!

.

i had a spare set of worn but servicable sprokets in town so i ran in and got them before the rain when the axle stripped i tried to weld then several times and got a spare axle dropped off at the truck and and used the spare hub with that the old sprokets were on the broken rear hub aka rock damage was a quick repair with some nickle rod just a 2 mile walk with parts in the ruck didn't even have to break track. didn't get a moose just too darnd wet and warm temps were a steady 55 to 60 degrees day and night we also took the 578 and tried to get in to tellagraph creek tha back way and got the tank high cenetered between the front and back my 11 year old got to learn the power of a #2 spade when we shoveled it out so we didn't have to walk weather was the worst i've seen

Don,

Who's Toyota powered Snow Trac? Just sitting out there uncovered? Wow what you guys can find up there.... Another "big wheel" model with the two band track....Seems to some what common now that I am seeing some machines. Does it have an owner?

Regards, Kirk

that is not a big wheel model it's had the front boggies cut out and a vw front axle grafted in to it it's an assed up way yto do it an they are weak and won't stay in the tracks. mine broke the ball joints just pulling it up on a trailer when i got it. stand by if and when i get it i might try some thing different with a torsion spring axle like a thiokol.
