PITTSBURGH (AP) — Agricultural giant Monsanto says two northwestern Pennsylvania farmers violated agreements not to plant seeds taken from crops grown using the company's patented seeds.
The suit filed Wednesday claims Steve and Harold Wiser violated licensing agreements they signed as conditions of purchasing the seeds. Monsanto says the men saved seeds from wheat crops grown in 2009 and 2010 and planted them this year.
The biotech company says replanting saved seeds violates their patent on their genetic modifications. Monsanto also claims it gives some farmers an unfair advantage over those who purchase new seeds each year.
A phone call to a number listed for Steve Wiser rang unanswered Thursday morning.
