Mitt & Ron face off ~ Perry, Gingrich... don't qualify for GOP ballot in Virginia

Looks like the bizarre election laws of Virginia may be seriously flawed. Only 2 candidates have even qualified to run in the GOP Presidential Primary in that state.

Those two are RON PAUL and MITT ROMNEY.

None of the other candidates managed to qualify. This could be a big blow to Rick Perry and Newt Ginrich as they really needed to have strong placements in the early primaries where proportional delegate counting would add to their delegate count totals. If only 2 candidates qualify it strikes me that the barriers to entry are flawed. :hammer: I honestly don't know if this is a Virginia GOP rule or if this is a Virginia rule for all candidates of all parties. If it is a GOP rule then the party in that state is full of idiots. If it is a state wide election law then it strikes me that there is no way for a hometown candidate to ever get any political power in that state and it truly means that big government has taken over the process.

I believe Virginia has a date by which to file the paperwork as most states do. Newt in now out of two primaries and perhaps more. He doesn't seem to have the organization behind him to even file by each states date. Now it doesn't surprise me that Newt didn't it does however that the others failed also.

To get a position on the ballot, you have to have 10,000 total signatures, with at least 400 from each of the 11 congressional districts. I don't know if this is higher or lower than the other states.

Go Ron Paul! Screw Romney - he is just a proxy candidate for the GOP old guard. Newt, Perry, and the rest missed the boat on this - says something about their organization and real support.

Looks like the Republican Party of Virginia is the authority that 'certifies' the validity of the signatures. Its widely believed that the GOP establishment is firmly behind Romney; is it possible that they may have judged the ballots of Perry and Gingrich with far more scrutiny than they did Paul and Romney?

Perry's campaign claimed to turn in 11,911 signatures.
Newt's campaign claimed to turn in 11,050 signatures.

In the most recent poll in Virginia, Newt had 30%, Romney 25%. No other candidate exceeds 9% in the poll.

Yep, sounds like typical Virginian hanky-panky to me.

Not only did Perry and Gingrich not get enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia ballot, but Bachmann, Santorum, and Huntsman didn't even get theirs turned in before the deadline.

I think the real problem is, even though there is the perfect opening to replace the current president with someone different in the opposing party, that party and its declared candidates seem to need better organization and more excitement. The qualified candidates have too much baggage or lack the drive to run an effective campaign.

Say what you will about president Obama (much of which I'm in agreement with), but this perfect opportunity for the republicans in 2012 has the appearance of being squandered by incompetence within their party.
