CNN is now reporting the shooting was NEAR the campus but apparently not on the campus.

(CNN) -- Police took a man into custody Monday after "multiple people" were shot near Texas A&M University, a police official said.

Several law enforcement officers were among the people shot, Rhonda Seaton of the College Station Police Department told CNN. She didn't have information on how many people were shot or their conditions.

She said a person identified as the gunman was in custody. The shooting happened about one block from campus, Seaton said.

The university had warned people to stay away from the intersection of Welborn Road and George Bush Drive as well as part of Fidelity Drive in College Station, Texas.
Apparently the campus police put out a warning to students because the event happened so close to campus. It is possible it is school related, its also possible it has nothing to do with the school. Too little information now.

One police officer is now reported dead

Update (3:06 p.m. EDT): The College Station Eagle reports that one of the police officers hit in the shooting has died.

Update (2:52 p.m. EDT): Police are planning a news conference to explain what happened, which will air live on KBTX, momentarily (streaming below). What we know so far is that the incident started shortly after noon, local time, "when a man barricaded in a house, armed with an automatic weapon, opened fire on officers," according to Dallas Morning News. Police have one suspect in custody, and the situation is under control. It happened off-campus, at Highland and Fidelity streets, in College Station.

Update (2:35 p.m. EDT): The local NBC affiliate KCEN reports six people were shot, including two police officers.

Update (2:15 p.m. EDT): Spokeswoman Rhonda Seaton, of*the College Station police department, which responded to the shooting, tells CNN that there are "multiple" injuries, but she couldn't yet say how many. She said the shooting happened "within a block or two" of campus.

Original: The early reports of a gunman near the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, outside of Houston, say a shooter, now in custody, appeared to be firing from a house with automatic weapons, hitting at least two police. The local station KBTX reported that "scanner traffic indicates that at least two officers are down." We'll keep the news updated as reporters arrive on the scene. The shooting, of course, comes on the heels of the mass shooting at a Wisconsin Sikh temple on Aug. 5, and the massacre at a Colorado movie theater on July 20. This shooting took place off campus. Police told CNN they issued a "Code Maroon" out of precaution.

The Eagle is reporting that multiple sources confirm 1 officer has died from gunshot wounds.

At least five people were taken to the College Station Medical Center but it wasn’t known if all were gunshot victims.

The incident appears to have unfolded about 12:15 p.m. at a house in the historical district of the city close to George Bush Drive. The Eagle’s police scanner early on picked up dispatchers saying that two officers were wounded. Initial reports state one was a constable.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect was in custody; it wasn’t clear if gunfire was exchanged. The person apparently was barricaded in a home for a short period.

From OfficerDown Org, it appears the guy was getting evicted from his home and decided to shoot the officer serving notice . . . any anyone else who walked past.

KBTX indicates the shooter was using an "automatic weapon". Just wonder if this is true, or if the reporter is once again misinformed of this important nuance. In any event, another tragic occurrence including a nut with a gun.

I once read that extended periods of hot weather brings these things to a head for some folks...and the murder rate is higher in those summers..

I wonder...

Regards, Kirk

I read the same thing Kirk. Personally, after working for 3 hours on Friday up on the roof in 102 degree temperatures, I didn't have the strength left to shoot anybody.

Believe it or not, I was a few blocks from there in a funeral procession at 12:05 on my way to bury my Aggie Brother in law. I didn't even know anything was going on till later in the day.

Well glad you didn't travel down the guys street!

Just glad you weren't added to the list. Doesn't help those that were hurt though!

Seems in the Mideast they love to set off bombs at funerals though, which is just sick in that of itself!

Yep, never will understand these nut jobs that do stuff like that, destroy families
lives forever over nothing.
