A man in southern Colorado says he killed a mountain lion with a shovel Sept. 26 after it acted aggressively toward him and his dog at a campground, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
The incident occurred west of Cañon City in Fremont County, and CPW officers were notified the following day. When the wildlife officer arrived, the dead mountain lion was found on the hood of the man’s SUV, according to CPW. The man, whose identity has not been released, explained that the lion allegedly approached him and his husky, then began fighting with the dog, CPW stated. Fearing for his life, the man struck the animal on the head with a shovel, resulting in its death, officials say.
The mountain lion, a 95-pound female, allegedly displayed unusual and aggressivebehavior. However, CPW guidelines do not classify the encounter as an attack since the man did not sustain any injuries and was never physically contacted by the lion. According to a preliminary investigation, CPW concluded that the man acted in self-defense. The lion’s body is set to undergo a necropsy to determine if there were any health conditions contributing to its behavior. Since the investigation is ongoing, CPW has not provided any further comments on the incident.
