Making new Edge Pro Mounted Stones.

The Tourist

Banned
I just got off of the telephone with Ben Dale at Edge Pro. Along with my usual order, I test prototypes for him.

In that regard, he asked me if I had tried a new method of removing the stones from the aluminum blank.

The blank itself can be recycled. Ben will sell you just the stone, and with a touch of 3M type 77 spray, the new stone can be affixed to the old mount.

Up until now, I used a sharp, fine chisel to remove the old stone.

Ben informs me that the "new method" is to get a pot of boiling water and then insert the old mounted stone. He informs me that inside of two minutes, the old stone slips right off of the blank.

BTW, I'd like to help Ben here. He is very concerned about quality control and satisfying his clients. He won't lie, and he'd rather eat the costs than hurt the client.

He has a very good stone that leaves a very good finish on a knife. The issue is that this is a problematic stone to use.

The ends will crumble, they do for me. Coupled with this, his last batch came from the supplier a tad short. Ben being a very honest man, set these stones aside for a loss.

I told Ben to put a sign on the box, "For Chico." He knows they work fine, but the issue is customer service.

If you use an Edge Pro, and you want a spooky, toasty sharp blade, then 800 stones, glass and 7000 grit polishing tapes should be a part of your regimen.

Like a tuned sports car, the impetus is on you to take care of this fine equipment. No whining, no complaining! The stones produce a fine swarf like octopus ink. The ends might crumble. The mounting leaves a little space on the ends of these stones. But they work incredibly well!

If you use an 800 grit Edge Pro stone, ask Ben for the "short ones." It is my opinion that the shorter variety do not bump the ramp or stone arm ends, causing the crumpling. And baby, will your knife get sharp!
