Looks like it was dunked in acid. WTH. I've no clue what really caused this but is sure is ugly.

Are you in a marina? Do you have electricity at your dock? Either way it looks like electrolysis and just replacing the lower unit isn't going to correct the problem. You're going to haft to find the source of the electrical leakage.
