Loss the hay crop

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
Just can't get a break in the weather . I am still trying to save one field that is cut but got rained out as I was rolling it this afternoon .

I just gave up on the front field and will bale it wet and give it to the Elk as time allows . The field is mud .

A lot of good hay is going to get wasted if we don't get a break ASAP.

That sucks ! Glad you don't have a whole bunch of cows to overwinter with hay. It hurts to lose a cutting but maybe you can get a smaller late cutting.

No 2nd cutting . In late August we start getting daily afternoon thunder showers . This was my only chance and unfortunately the rain just killed us this year .
I have stands of grass 4' high plus in the fields and can't get it cut and dried to bale before it gets rained on .

Too bad as all my haying equipment was just tuned up and is really to roll !
If this is any indication of the coming winter , I will close up the ranch and I am leaving for Panama .

Al, I've been cutting hay for 6 years now, but only 10 acres. I have spent many an anxious night watching the weather after cutting day. I think making hay is more stressful than regular cash crops because the timing has to be "just right" where corn & soybeans, etc have a lot more flexibility when harvesting.

I am truly sorry for you Al, and for all you Farmers. You work so hard, and pit your wits against the impossible and capricious elements time and time again. Where would we all be without you all. I so hope that things improve for you Al, soon. :flowers:
