Looking for new TV

I'm shopping for a new LED or LCD HDTV in the 42" to 50" range with 1080p. Now I need at least 2 HDMI outputs but would prefer more. I also want the standard jack type out put of at least 2. I'm looking in the range of about $1000 or so.

I'm not sure of the difference in picture quality between LED and LCD as well as refresh rates etc. Having 1 eye means no interest in 3-D ready type TV. Oh and using a DirecTV HD-DVR receiver, Blu-Ray player, Security camera feed (RCA type plugs) and grand kids Wii game. No sound system nor plans to buy one.

I would appreciate any advise as my 60" Sony project has given it up (10 year old set). 60" was just a little big for my living room so I want to go smaller than that.

Take a look at Samsung. I have 5 of those and their price to performance ratio is tough to beat.

I've also got 1 of the VIZEO LCD panels and have no complaints with that one either.

Thanks Mel. I have a Samsung in my bedroom that I bought about a year ago. I guess it is about 32" and like it also had a 46" Toshiba projection I gave to one of my son's a couple of years ago that I had in storage.

I was looking in the local ads and saw a number of Samsung TV's and the prices looked reasonable also.

I've never had any problems with any of my Samsungs and have new (less than 6 months) and old (6+ years) Samsung sets. All are great.

+1 on the Vizio. And you should be able to get a 120Hz 1080p 42" LCD for under $500.

I found a 46" Samsung and a 47" Vizeo both are 1080p 120 mhz 4 HDMI and about the same for the rest of the features in the $700 to $800 range. I will go over Monday and look at them and see which I like best.

Meanwhile any one know what the differences are between Plasma, LCD, LED displays?

Thanks jpr also.

I have a Plasma and an LCD. I am told the plasma uses more power probably not a big deal but my only complaint is the plasma picks up glare so bad and tough to watch during the day.. I probably would not buy another plasma especially now just getting a LCD.

Also I have good luck with Samsung products

We have a Vizio in our kitchen. Not a happy camper about the picture quality. I also have a Vizio computer monitor at work and the picture is ok ther.

I do love the picture on my bedroom Samsung as well as the sound. I have a Panasonic in about 24" size in the front bedroom that also has a good picture but sound isn't as good though it is only 720p max.

Well I just came back a little while ago from a place up the street. I looked at serveral TV's including Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Sharp etc. They had one thought that the picture was the sharpest as well as the best colors. I've never really heard of the brand but it has a 3 year warranty which is a year longer than most of the others I looked at. It was a Hisense 55" LCD/LED with internet connection for $849 delived to my door. It had all of the features that I wanted with 4 HDMI outlets, USB, PC etc. It was considerably cheaper in price that comparable sets in the 55" range but really a much better picture than the others had. Sound seemed to be about on par with the others as well.

Plasma can tend to glare or mute under bright light or sun, and has a shelf life.

LCD - liquid crystal diode is proven technology, and probably most cost effective today. And the brightest IMO.

LED - light emitting diode is the newest fandangle and most expensive. Just like new LED lights are less than impressive, so is LED TV in my opinion.

I am no geek, but if I had to choose, I'd go with LCD. But it seems that every 18 months the electronics across the realm are obsolete. Thanks you, Steve Jobs.

HINT: If you really want a bargain, go find the very best 720 TV you can still find on the shelf. You and I would never know the difference between it and 1080, which is the reason men on MSNBC wear so much make-up. Al Sharpton looks like he just came off a PoTA set.

I can actually see a difference between 1080p and 720p on TV's larger than 32", less t. I also have Blu-ray player which really shows a difference and I use HDMI cables to connect to the set including my DirecTV boxes which also makes a very big difference in picture quality.
