Looking for log chokers

Hey all,

I assume this is the best forum for snowcat-related questions. Maybe a new forum should be created for things that apply to field use. Stuff like communications, logging, selling a machine, etc. could go into a forum called "Snowcat Play Area" or something like that.

But back to my question!

I'm looking for sources of log chokers. These are also called wire ropes and they have either hooks or ferrels on them, running 2-8' in length. You loop them around the log and you can drag it across the snow. I've done some searches and looked at www.mcmaster.com but it seems like I'm not finding the variety I should. I'm interested in 3/8" to 1/2" diameter wire, too.

Does anybody have good leads on where to buy logging chokers?

Thanks!

Ken

Ken ,
How many do you need ? I am returning to Idaho in early Oct . and may be able to get a couple .I know my nieghbor has some but do not know if he wants to sale any .

Try Baileys. Do a search on "choker", there seems to be plenty there.

Hey Big Al,

I could use quantity (2) 1/2" diameter 4-6' chokers, preferable with some kind snap ring, snap hook or similar quick-attachment fitting on the end that loops back onto itself.

Ask your neighbor, too. I could drop by your place on a trip to Sacramento anytime.

They don't let you guys cut down trees as easily as up here. The whackos used to get their paws into our business, but since the place has been catching fire fuel reduction is all the rage. So I'm goin' for it this winter!

I just cut a notch all the way around and the tree dies a natural death !:yum: . Copper nail works too . I have no problem cutting down trees .Legal or illegal ! Tree huggers don't seem to like me much .I seen way to many friends put outta work my those nutcases .

I live by a new rule now .... "Go to Jail ,Eat for free"

EDIT: If a loop on each end will work ,I think I have a couple extras at the ranch you can use. There 1/2" by about 6' long . Its what I use to drag logs with . I just run them around the log and through the loop and attach to the tractor . works great !

DaveNay,

Bailey's is what I was looking for, especially after looking at their selection and prices! They've got it all, for a fair price. Thanks for the lead!

I owe you a beer.

Ken

BigAl,

And of course you know about our bear problem lately. 260 breakins in the Tahoe area this summer.

Shoot, shovel and shutup! The only problem is you need a backhoe to bury the critters.

Does anybody know how this kind of choker works? It's so darned simple, I'm sure, but I'm kind a ding-dong sometimes.

I assume that the loop part is connected to a hitch or another cable. But how do I get that big loop through the little red ferrul?

I believe the ferrule end goes around the log, and then is locked in place by the sliding red piece. The permanent loop hooks onto a winchline.

DaveNay,

That makes sense. I was having a scale problem with their picture and didn't know that the red ferrule can slide around on the cable. Now I've got it!

Good prices from those guys. Even if these chokers fail they're about 1/3rd the price of McMaster.

Hell, don't take my word for it. I've never skidded a log in my life, and I live in the middle of a cornfield. :pat:

McMaster has everything but at TOP TOP prices. BUT its a one stop shop for hard to find items and can sometimes get you what you need in a hurry. I only use them as a last resort!

I used to sell these things by the hundreds. Check you yellow pages for "riggers, rigging or wire rope." These shops will be able to make them up for you in whatever length and diameter you need. Give these folks a call.

kgracey your picture shows the type of choker we use and it works well. It is easy to push thrpouh the snow under the butt of the fallen tree and easy to engage. Just simply push it through the hole and it locks. Also quite easy to disengage at the landing. Ideally you want several attached to a mainline from the winch so you just have to release the winch and pull the chokers over to the butts so you can hook up several trees, then pull the winch in to pull your trees up to the tractor and this will transfer some of the weight for traction. To keep the mainline from chafing we use the slider pictured in davenays #3 post. Hope this helps.
