Looking for a Turntable to take my vinyl to digital format.

Anyone have a turntable that plugs into the computer and records your records to MP3 format?

I was looking at the Sony PS-LX300USB and the reviews for playback were good (for the price of the unit) but most complained about the record to the computer. Thinks like you can't listen to it while it's recording.

Thoughts/recommendations?

Don't know much about them, but I know for me I would want one that digitally removes the pops inherent on any record used more than once. Not sure if they do that, but if they can put a man on the moon they can surely remove pops. :yum:

I've been looking at the turntables and most have bundled software (e.g. Audacity Software) which is supposed to take the snaps and pops out.

I did mine with my old turntable connected to a cheap Radio Shack amp $29.95. Connected this to an outdated PC I had around running generic conversion software. Everything worked fine.

Brian, I just finished transferring some old cassette tapes from the 70's to digital format on my computer. At first I also wasn't able to listen to the audio while it was recording until I realized what was happening. When I plugged in the cassette deck my computer automatically set it to be the input device and also the audio playback device (as opposed to my internal sound card as it normally is). Once I set the playback to the sound card I was able to listen to the cassette and use the normal volume controls. My hunch is this is the same issue the reviewers of this turntable are having.

P.S. It may just be in my head but I swear the audio sounds better now through the computer than it did straight off the cassette in my stereo.

Thanks for the heads-up Lawrence. What kind of cassette deck (or how new) do you have to plug it into your computer? After I get my vinyl digitized, I'm going to do my cassettes.

Thanks Bob! I was in Target the other day and saw some Crosley's but never gave them a close look thinking they were for playback only. They don't have this model but I'll be shopping around.

I did the conversion with my 19 year old home stereo. I used a 3.5mm cable to go from the headphone output on my stereo to the line in on my laptop. It won't work with a microphone input on a pc, it has to be either a line in or a combo line in/mic in.
I did some research on the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/BestDealUSA-CTE-039-2MX-p-Cassette-Deck-Converter/dp/B0065DMVUI"]USB cassette decks [/ame]which are basically Walkman's with a USB cable attached. I couldn't find a single one with stellar reviews and most said the motors started slowing down after only a few complete tapes.
My mother-in-law has one of the Crosley units like Bob posted and it sounds great for playback but I haven't tried converting with it. That definitely would be a more simple way to do it just more costly.

When I was looking for mine, Target did not carry the Director model in stores - mail order only.

There was one store in my area that carried them in their stores: Belks. You can see the Crosley at Belk's web site here:

The advantage of buying from Belk's stores is they have a Senior special one Tuesday a month; plus you can often find other coupons that give you an extra percentage off. Not sure if you can do this online or not, but it would be worth looking into.

It looks like Sears has them. I have a window open somewhere on this computer but it'll be next week before I complete the shopping process.
