LOOKING for a personal use snowcat - Advice, Help needed!

Thank You---In an earlier note I was looking for advise on getting a track machine to get to a cabin a mile off the blacktop in Vermont. I need a machine that is reliable, replacement parts available, on the lighter side (as I need to transport) etc.. I was thinking AkTiv, thiokol Imp, Kristi, Bombi. Any input? And most important I am not the government some it must be reasonably priced. Thank You

Deerhunter, I have an Aktiv Snow Trac and can recommend them from personal experience. The Thiokol units are also proven in commercial and personal applications by many users here.

For what you are looking for, I'd suggest that any of these would work very well for you.

I do have a question, will you be trailering it? If so what is your tow rig? The Snow Trac is small and light enough to tow on a simple car carrier (bed between the trailer wheels) behind a vehicle with about a 4500# tow capacity. An IMP or a Super IMP will also be able to be towed behind a modest capacity tow vehicle but both are wider and need to be towed on a trailer with a bed OVER the wheels. A Spryte is a bit heavier and needs a bigger tow vehicle and also needs a trailer with a bed over the wheels.

Thanks--So which would you recommend? The Bombardier, as you are Canadian? I kind of like the AKtiv based on nothing as I have never had any experience with any of them. Thats why I came to this site for INSITE. My Dad was a logger and before Skidders he had a Bombardier Muskeg with Chrys. V8--Big time maintance--the tracks were totally rebuild every spring. But logging is tough on equipment, skidders quickly replaced the tracked vehicle, for speed , manuverability, and maintaince cost.

Yes I will need to trailer..I have a 4x4 150 certainly not over kill. I hope to have it in place for most of the season...Where it can be plugged in. Which brings us to the next question: do you use an oil pan heater? Or is there something better, due to the lack of a liquid cooling system.

Bombardier makes excellent snowcats. The Bombi has a small 2 person cabin, no real inside storage area for carrying extra supplies, groceries, gear, etc. The Snow Trac is typically found with a 7 person cabin (although it is a tight squeeze for 7 people) which gives room for a few folks and supplies inside + it has outside storage rails over the tracks. The IMP, Super IMP and Spryte all come in various different cabin configurations from 2 to 10 passengers. Other that the full cabin configurations all the others have some sort of flatbed on the rear for carrying stuff.

As for the Snow Trac, no I do not have an oil pan heater. Nor do I know of anyone who does. Use a high quality synthetic and you should be good to go.

Thanks, Now do you know of any Snow tracs for sale--and what if anything do you know about the one in BC. It I believe was a CN/CP machine. 1975 vintage. And what shape? What is it worth considering I'd have to truck accross the country.
