Looking at used Flail Mower - any advice?

I'm going to look at a used Befco 25 Flail mower tomorrow.

Anything I should look out for? Does anyone know what it costs to buy a new set of blades for one of these things?

Thanks,

PB

Get a rock guard for behind the seat.

Have you used one before? Shouldn't be a problem as I'm thinking of using it to mow lawn and pasture.

Is the cut quality good enough for a nice lawn? It looks like Befco sells different types of flails for better quality cut.

I like the look of the short profile on them. They seem like they would be easier to use then the big rear brush hog which I seem to bash into everything.

I have a 84" ford 918 flail mower .I bought it used and the previous owner had never used it . So far I am not to happy with it . I tried sharping the blades and that helped a little . They make different blades for different types of cuts . I think mine is out of balance as it really viberates . The new blades run around $2 a piece I believe . Mine came with another brand new set so I plan to change them all out and try again .
Good luck ,but I would tell them you want to see it in action before buying .

That wasn't smart-a$$!

I have never used any kind of tow-behind mower, but I would absolutely investigate a rock guard if I was to look at buying one.

I guess I just live on the edge a little more than you!:D I take off all the safety stuff on my mowers. It just clogs stuff up!

I think I might also ride faster horses and younger women, drink older whisky, and have less money too!

But obviously I am not quite as cool as "The Dude" or the "The Brye"

Well I bought it!

It's a Befco H25 Flail Mower (approx. 60") wide. I got it for $750 which I think is reasonable. It looks similar to the attachment just more beat up and the scraper is missing from the rear roller.

Some grease, and a few new bolts and it works like a charm. It's much easier to navigate around trees and obstacles when you don't have the big tail of the rough cut mower.

It needs new blades (or at least sharpened blades) so I'm trying to order some fine cut blades for it. It mowed down some 4 foot pasture grass and weeds pretty good.

No vibration so I suspect that is a good sign.

Just always keep in mind that when you pickup an old roll of barbwire, net fencing or old garden hose that you'll be laying on your back for quite awhile with torch or knife.

:yum: the same can be said about a garden hose and a snowblower the only difference is the weather is worse when you wrap a garden hose up in a snowblower!
