London Day Trip: BATH & Salsbury

Took a rainy day trip to see Salsbury Cathedral in southwest England, not too far from Bath. The Cathedral is simply astounding. Probably most impressive given that it was built in a very short time span, less than 50 years in the early 1200s. The spire, if I recall correctly, is over 400' tall. I'm still in awe of the fact that they could lift stones 400' into the air without the help of a crane or any modern machine. The spire is the tallest in all of northern Europe. Not sure how they built this thing 800 years ago, not sure how they built it so fast, given that many cathedrals take HUNDREDS of years to build, but they did it and they did a magnificent job.

The Roman Baths, in Bath England. These date to the time of Christ.

Thanks again Bob.

One of the first trips my wife and I made after we were married was to Bath.

Salisbury Cathedral, along with York Minster, are among my favorite churches. They are just astounding. My favorite building though is probably still the Natural History Museum in London. I spent many a wet afternoon wandering around that building. We used to live within walking distance of it and I went to college at the Royal School of Mines at Imperial College which is just around the corner.

Keep them coming. You can't have run out yet.

Apparently I 'lived' in the same neighborhood as you. The Natural History Museum was a few blocks one direction from where we had our London apartment, Kennsington Palace was a couple blocks the opposite direction.

I'm still sorting through the photos. Almost 3000 total.

As for Salisbury, it really is astounding. The Roman Baths were pretty ingenious, but the spire of Salisbury, as well as the rest of the structure is amazing.
