Log Skidding

I am in the process of collecting logs to mill into rough cut for a wood shed I am building. I have my eyes on a large piece of oak I know my utility tractor won't budge. The oak was left by the power company clearing the right of way and I have permission to get the wood. Any thoughts on a quick one time fix to get the front of the log off of the ground to pull it out with my Bombi without adding hydraulics or buying a log cart/skidder contraption? I do have a small utility winch on the back of my cat.

Whats the size of the log? A Bombi for pulling her out? It really depends on how heavy the piece of timber is. Forget the atv winch. Maybe two Hi lift jacks one on each side and then dropping the end in chain sling off the back of the pintle hitch? Again depends on size and weight of the timber.

try this,,,,,dig a large hole under the front of the log, and back a few feet under it. place a few 4x4's or 2x6's in the hole. on the ground between the pulling vehicle and the hole, place a railroad tie or other piece of large material. throw your choker on the log, start skidding it.as it moves forward, it will hit the wood in the hole (which is at an angle) and ride up onto the large piece of material you placed infront of the hole. leaving it lifted up what ever height you need.

oak is really heavy,,,good luck. i do alot of skidding pine here with my job, and run a "woodmizer mill". one other trick,,,,,get yourself a "ripping" chain from BAILEYS or another timber company. cut the log in half long ways. it will make it lighter and easier to mill, since its only 18" now, and has a nice flat side on it.

Oak 10.5 feet by 22" weighs 1770 pounds.

People have used car hoods under logs to help them slide. You could also round off the edges of the forward end so it won't dig in.

If you use a short chain on it and keep your forward momentum, that will help keep the end up off the ground.

pixie is right,,,hoods (old VW or ford/chevy truck) make dandy skids. 22" will still give you some grief, but im sure youll manage. PM me. id like to chat with you regarding your mill and experience running it.

Am I correct that my Bombi should have plenty of power to pull this log? I believe log skidding was one of their intended purposes?

Got bold, hooked up the chains and pulled it out with minimal effort. Got stuck on a few small bumps and had to reangle but no problem. When I got to the 4 foot lip onto the road I broke the chain twice and spun the tracks. Next day got my truck and put a chain on the two ends of the tree and pulled it onto road. Got my Ventrac and barely pulled it down the road to my loading site. I have a trailer with a 9,000 lb Warn winch to pull the logs onto it to take to the mill. Forgot the camera. Sorry. I think this tree weighed more than my tractor because when I tried to lift the bucket the rear end of the tractor went up in the air.
