Log Skidding Project (video posted)

very nice action. i noticed you thanked CDF (california dept of forestry) at the end. is that just for giving you the timber harvest plan? just curious,,,,,i work for them in southern cali. are you in their call when need book (contract hire)? you should look at getting into it as a resource if your not. also contact the USFS to get into their book.

Great Video !!!!:thumb:
I also see that you thanked CDF
I work for them as a Heavy Fire Equipment Operator
I spent a week opening up roads to our repeater sites with a D6N couple weeks ago. Even on the coast here, we have had alot of snow this winter.

Robert

Thanks for the great video !! :applause: Music was SO perfect !!!

I wish I had gotten a tenth as much done but the J5 doesn't ride on top of the snow as well. I know what kind of machine I want next !! :bonk:

Nice video sir:

It's refreshing to see someone actually using their cat! I agree with Boggie. Clearly not enough beer consumed!

Thanks. Off to pet my Kitty........And drink a beer...............

Cool video Ken. I will nominate you for snow cat Grammy award for working snow cat class...............:thumb:

Your ratio of beers to trees removed is a little low so practice more this summer and see if you can improve on that end...:yum:

Hey all,

To answer your questions. Took me a while to get back to forums because of my day job. Darned day job!

Boggie, the beers were consumed all in the same day - the only day I had a helper! :coolshade Other days I didn't mix the work with hydration since I was working alone. You need to be thinking about my next machine for me. I really like the Skidozer model and in the future I want one with a 6 or 8 cylinder gas engine and hydraulic brake steer, and 36" tracks, blade, two-man cab. I don't need a Mainer-style restoration, but I want it to be re-built in original style and ready to run for years without concern. This hydro machine is awesome, but it's a huge beast that I can't easily move around and I don't have a shop big enough to squeeze it in should I have to replace a pump or motor. For this job, though, it couldn't have been beat! Hopefully you can provide me a rebuilt machine in the future. . . if the darned gas prices make delivery within the realm of reason again.

SoCal4t12, the CDF was very helpful to me. I didn't do a THP due to the fact that this is non-commercial and that there's some local need to remove this dead stuff quickly since we had the Angora fire last year. The CDF guy helped me identify what to take, what to leave, etc. I wouldn't want to get into their call book, though. I think what made this project so enjoyable is that I didn't have to perform, and it was done on my schedule. I also don't have a way to move my machine around. My 220K Subaru can't pull it very far. . .

Oh yes. Subaru! I just picked up a Suby for my wife. The darned thing didnt come with a tow hitch though. But it did come with 305 HP and can run the 1/4 mile in 13 sec.. NOW if we can only get a snowcat to do that!

I"m starting to think about your project, Are you going to make me post the rebuild on the forums? are you trading in the hydro machine ?

"make me post" ???? What's this 'make' stuff about?

Wouldn't you get some sort of almost humanitarian deep-intrisic-high-value sense of 'giving' if you voluntarily posted such an exciting project? I, for one, would like to see a proper 'Boggie-team-build'.

How about *THIS* :coolshade it becomes a private area of the forum where people pay a subscription fee to see commercial-grade restorations? Each person required to pay... dunno... $50? that will cover the full project. Then the proceeds can be split between cat-project-provider and restorer? If it's the same then they just keep the full bag of gold. ???? (I'd say keep it public but to incent more people to contribute than a handful of us odd-balls).

We need more restorations going! They're out there...Boggie & others... and it would make great reading material for the forum.

Then if it really caught on we could get some manufacturer sponsorship and have a "This Old Snowcat" forum, each year sponosored by a different manufacturer that shells out $10K? $20K? clams that go toward projects. Maybe some snowcat clubs and/or snowmobile clubs could contribute so we have several sponsors? If that were the case then I'd suppose whatever restorer got in early in the process might get dibs on many of the projects..??? (:5boobs: uh-he-hum...uhh...anyone come to mind...anyone out there??? :boobies: :coolshade "B...B....Bo...") :drink:

It's a win-win for everyone...people get to see and read more...restorers/project-owners get more coin/subsidized, etc.... yea, yea, trade secrets, blah, blah... come on, it ain't rocket science we're talking here so sharing is much better than hoarding!

????

Mainer speaking of Videos and such werent you supposed to send all of us a video of some scantily dressed "HOT" womn doing some sort of strip tease in the 601 we all agreed not to bid on since you wanted it? WELL?????

Yes, he was................ but you know we might all be satisfied with some in person live show also.....:yum: :yum:

Oh, fear ye-not! I will without question deliver as promised... but it'll take me a bit of time. I'm just going to have to work hard to keep myself out of it! On second thought..."Guys, there's another 601 I'm going to have to bid on... now, I shot that video and I'm about to post it but my big arse is in there too... you don't mind right? Or if you let me bid on this second 601 then I'll edit out my own 'stand-in' bits!" ;)
Like I said... it'll come.... but I must call upon additional reserves of patience due to logistical challenges.

Now...back to the meat ... 'This Old Snowcat' ???? Or I am I lone-man in the corner with a bad bag of crack? ;) Maybe Snow Ops "uber-powder-cat" would be an ideal first 'show'?

It is just the time thing to photo and film everything. better yet come to the facility and go through a training program where you get hands on training in the rebuild process yourself and for a nominal fee we will train you in the rebuild process. bring your own machine rebuild it here pay for parts and assistance we even have room for lodging beer extra :yum: :yum: then we will start a TV program called snowcat build off or pimp these cats :yum:

Brad, I wouldn't make you post the rebuild on the forums. I'll let Mainer and SnowOps pressure you into making such posts with pictures. They're more Thiokol fans than Bombardier but maybe they'll get a few photos out of you along the way of the rebuild. I sent you a PM about trading, too, so check it out.

I understand it takes a lot of time, and I wouldn't want to be paying for your photo posting time if I'm already paying for a rebuilt machine.

I think I need to pay you a visit pretty soon so we can get something started.

Guys, I think I figured out something about Boggie today. I'm a bit slow to make basic determinations, but here it goes: he types with one finger, well. .. two if you count his left and right hands. You guys can out-type him. What you can type in a minute takes him much longer. For this reason, he keeps his jokes, posts and picture uploads pretty brief.

Nothing really, except that Boggie isn't as productive on the forums as we'd all like him to be! It's a good thing you're also a two-finger-tootsie else we'd be hearing more from your corner, too! I better cool it before I start getting the BigAl treatment.:pat:

Yea, you're risking banishment into the oblivion... no one answers your posts... no one cares about your 601... I mean you Skidozer... no one... ;) hey.. wait a minute. Guys? Guys!?!

Now me, I type with all my digits and let them fly like a streaming consciousness... and I can drone on and on and on and on about 601's until Boggie finally gets the two fingers ramped up and threatens to send me a faulty OC15 that needs rebuild... just to tease me! or worse... he puts up some photos of...gulp... non-original 601's! :4_11_9: :4_11_9: Bastardized into creatures :drink: :puke1: from Toy Story built by that mischievious kid! (ok, dads, you know you've seen it so don't play dumb).

Good thing is...the two-finger possy is straight to the point...no BS ... no foreplay. ;)

Now, Mainer, lets keep the facts straight I did not rebuild those machines in Alaska just supplied some parts and we use them go moose hunting. a real nice older gentleman did the work. not original work but good work, yes I do not care for the Pipe handle either but it will do far better with the Nodwell drives and tracks than the original machine another very weak point on a 601 is the axles in rough terrain and if it is cold you better bring spares broke two on one trip once. :thumb: hey he can type...............

LOL. OK, OK, I thought they were your creatures of creation... like an erector set into the hands of a mad-601-scientist. :yum:

But, to be fair, the work does look like very good work, that's one reason I thought it was yours :pat: (here goes more Boggie-ego-points, but have to give the credit where credit is due...) so to balance that out... :moon:

Yea, the axles are a weak point and that is exactly the kind of thing that I think is ok to beef up significantly to compensate for a weakness that could leave you stranded. Stranded is simply not kewl. :snow2_smi: :snow2_smi: and an axle upgrade also something that wouldn't be overtly and grotesquely obvious to the nake eye and even the trained eye wouldn't mind it. To contrast that, doing something like changing to Nodwell tracks...well, I've talked with plenty of guys that have abused the hell out of their 601's in the outback doing who knows what... and rarely do they break a grouser..under heavy non-snow type off-road abuse. They do break axles. So, doing something like switching to a Nodwell walking-beam system would be a modification that would be excessive in my book of balancing originality and usability/reliability. But, upgrading the axle to meet heavy use/impact/etc... still fits into a real-world cat that has attention given to originality. I also think it's very important to keep a book that travels with the cat... all modifications with supporting photos/specs so that maintainability/awareness can be easily passed to a subsequent owner (passed down to family or sold to others...whichever).

I also wanted to briefly note that I think there are some very kewl projects out there that have been crafted from cats that are pretty readily available to come up with some highly useable cats (ie, Thiokol 2100's & 3700's & older PB's)... like T2T's van-groomer. That is one of the coolest cats out there along with the Tucker Bus... so, it's a timing/classic/rare thing too. Granted, add 15 years onto today's date and then maybe those are all in the same bucket of rare/scarce, etc... but I think taking single/double passenger groomer cats and modifying the heck out of those is actually a very cool engineering achievement that adapts something barely useable to something highly useable and functional.
