Log Home Exterior Stain

Well it's that time again and the house needs to be cleaned and stained. I'm figuring with all the Snowcat owners on board that some of them have log homes. I've been using Sashco High Sierra since building. HS is solvent/water-based and I know there have been advances in new low VOC water-based formulations. I'm looking for a good water-based stain and I'm thinking about going with Defy.

Good reference links I've been using include .........

Log Help
Log Care Products

Typically they do not endorse products like Thompsons or Olympic. It doesn't matter to me as long as it's water-based. All recommendations say I should stay with water-based even though I'm very tempted to switch.

So being a moderator, I require all log home owners and paint specialist to respond......:yankchain:

Hey Big Dog.. my log farm house was built in 1790.. the outside is covered w/ what they call "German Siding".. I believe it has abestos in it.

One day I'd like to strip it off down to the logs.. put in new windows.. re-mortar the stone foundation. This info will def. be helpful.

My new log house is (about half stained before winter came) stained with Sikkens. It is beautiful. The log home supplier I used (Golden Eagle Log Homes) supplied the stain as part of the package and they have had good results with the product. The recommended any surface facing direct sunlight to be recoated as soon as the sheen fades off which averages 5 years. Areas that do not get direct sunlight (north side for example) can last as long as 10+ years before the next coat is needed.

Sikkens was my first option but it's all solvent-based. I've never heard anything bad about it and it's probably the only one I'd go with solvent-based.

Which log home product did they use on your home Av8r3400? Cetol, SRD or Log

Honestly I'd have to look at the can, 'Dog. I'll get back to you on this when I get home this afternoon.

Process:

Wash with pressure washer
spray with bleach solution (5:1 mixture)
wait 20 minutes
wash off bleach with pressure washer
2-3 days to dry in non-rain weather

1st coat - looks flat sheened
calk joints, ect.
2nd coat - higher gloss when dry

The glossyness is the indicator of when reapplication is needed.

Ours is the Sikkens Cetol, Log & Siding stain. We used Natural Light color mixed evenly with Natural Oak color.

The light was too "orange" and the oak was too "brown" but mixed the color is perfect. Watch my website for more pictures.

I just looked at the photos of your house and it is very nice. It looks like you and I have very similar fireplaces. I will post a pic sometime when I'm home.

I put Thompson's solvent base on when I finished the house in "95" then did it again in 99 and haven't had to touch it since. 13 bucks a gallon at Walmart. I put it on with a very high pressure sparyer.
