Living in truck for last 4 hours

DaveNay

Klaatu barada nikto
Power went out some time last night. Marshall woke us up crying when he got cold. I used all the gas on the propertyin the last couple days for plowing so no gerator. Got in the truck to go to in laws and can't get down the driveway because the power lines are laying in the middle of the drive and I don't know if they are hot. So the three of us and the dog have been sitting in the truck to keep warm while waiting for Comed to make sure its safe to drive over the lines.

Sorry to hear that Dave. Not a good way to start out Christmas Eve. Here's hoping Coned gets there soon and either fixes your power or at least makes sure the downed lines are dead. Good luck man.

Dave i hope you get sorted real soon....keep us updated and take good care of your family.

Dave when I saw the title I worried you went off the road with all this ice. We lost power too. But my generator is natural gas. Hopefully you'll be able to get out soon?Any chance of driving over the frozen ground around the wires?

Hope it works out soon , Merry christmas
But my generator is natural gas.

I really need to look at a Propane powered generator . The gasoline one's is a pain to always be checking at the ranch.
Are you happy with your setup ??

Yes. Mine was purchased before all these newer automatic generator sets were popular so I purchased a Tri-Fuel generator (propane, natural gas and/or gasoline). I had it connected to the natural gas line from my utility and its been great. I've got a Generac generator powered by a 16hp Briggs Vanguard V-twin engine. Its been trouble free for a dozen years or more.

What I like is that it ALSO has a 5 gallon gas tank on the top, so if I need to I can switch from N.G. to Gasoline by simply filling the tank and switching off the N.G. line. It is wonderful to be able to run it non-stop without having to go out and refill the gas tank. Its also great not to have to worry about running out of gasoline.

I had a gas generator before, this is a great improvement. If I ever build again, move, or if this gen-set ever dies, then I'll convert over to one of the more modern automatic units that does all the self-starting, etc. But until then this one is a great improvement over gasoline only.

Sorry to hear about your problem Dave. Stay warm and ration the gas in the truck. There's no telling when they'll show up to fix it. Hope it's soon. By the time you read this you'll probably be out of there.

Update....no update.

Went in the house for a couple hours but started getting cold so back in the truck again.

Dave,
Can you call a cab or friend to take you to a hotel ...assuming you could walk past the downed wires. What a mess. I wish you and your family well.

Thanks for the suggestion greg, but it would be a 1/4 mile walk either down a ice coated driveway or ice coated 8 in of snow in the hay field all while it is freezing rain and sleet and blowing 20 mph.

Thankfully I just talked to Larry the field dispatch manager and a crew is on the way.

Sorry to hear of this Dave.

If your house is getting really cold, you may want to open the faucets a bit to keep the pipes from freezing.

Good luck Dave. I bought my generator when we were left without electric for 5 days after an ice storm. End of each month I fire it up and run for at least a couple of minutes to keep fresh gas in the carburetor. We needed it last winter for about 5 hours on the coldest night of the winter.

Yeah, we're ok. We got out shortly after my last post. The truck that came out made everything safe but there is no timeline for the repair...quite possibly days. We are now camped out at the MIL place.

Tomorrow I will get the generator going so that we have water for the horses...so far I was able to dip into one of the 150 gallon troughs to fill the stall horses buckets.

This is the best Christmas EVER!

Dave all things considered its not so bad. You get to eat some good slavic food at the MIL's house, right???
