LED Light Warning.

I have this obsession with lights. I've got the latest flashlights. I've got all sort of sensor lights, timers, etc. During the past year or so I've started buying LED lights (nightlights, sensor lights and even LED lighbulbs). Standard LEDs are suppose to have a life of about 100,000 hours of CONTINOUS use -- that's OVER 11 YEARS!

Just a sidenote, I am NOT talking about the high-output "Luxeon" LED which give off MUCH more light but also have a much shorter life span. I'm talking about standard LEDs.

Anyway, as I was saying, I purchased a number of LED nightlights, sensor lights and even LED lighbulbs and some of them are starting to burn out after only about 1 year (or less) of use.

If you buy any of this type of stuff, I would definitely suggest hanging on to the package and the receipt for a while in case they burn out on you.

HA you sound like you do what I do! But I don't save the packages :smileywac

I have dozens of compact flouresecent lights in my house, LED flashlights in the cars, snowcat, tractors, luminescent panel lights as nightlights, etc.

I have not purchased any of the new LED lightbulbs but I know they are now becoming available. My question is do they actually have GUARANTEES on them with extended time periods? Just because something can --in theory-- last 10 years, does not mean it is guaranteed for more than a short period of time.

I've found with the C.F. bulbs they claim they outlast 6 regular light bulbs but while that is often true for the higher quality C.F. bulbs, I've found it to be terribly optimistic for the bargain brands that often begin to flicker and fail after 3 to 5 years (while I've got some expensive ones that have been in use for a decade!).

Good point. Since I didn't keep the packaging, I'm not sure what was actually guaranteed but the next time I buy one, I'll definitely pay attention to it.

I switched to flourecent light bulbs in my basement about a year ago. Got tired of changing those regular light bulbs out every few months. Must be something wrong with the wiring in the basement. Anyway I have had those down there for a year now. The LEDs are supposed to be much better and will try those next. What kills a light bulb is the on and off cycles. Watched MYTH BUSTERS and yes the LED bulbs do save you money and the LEDs lasted the longest even with the on and off cycles. The MYTH they busted was it was cheaper to leave a light on all the time because of the power spike when you turn it on. Thats a Complete MYTH. Its cheaper for you to turn a light off when not in use than to leave it on. They then went to meaure the power output of all the diffrent type of buld including those LED light bulbs. Those must have 200 small LEDs on them. They ended up lasting 10 times longer and used the least amount of power.

From what I hear the LED lightbulbs dont put out nearly the same amount of light, cost 350% more and burn out in about 1-2 years. I think the flourecents are the way to go.
