Landscaping ideas needed

With the bulk of the construction completed on the new arena, we are starting to look for ideas to landscape around the sides of the building. I would like to plant small bushes at the base of the walls, perhaps a boxwood or juniper or.....something. Here's the rub though, I have almost 350' of building to landscape, so I can't use $50 plants. The environment is also pretty tough....the south wall will be mostly hot sun, while the north side will be cool shade. It can get pretty dry some summers, but when it rains, the bushes will be getting A LOT of water from the roof of the building (no gutters).

I guess I am looking for a perfect plant, cheap. :D

Boxwood is a fine choice.

Some Red-Twig Dogwood may work as well.

Holly may be nice in areas commonly viewed as they're green all year.

Many find Juniper to smell like cat piss. Use at your discression.

Arborvite (sp) is always a great choice.

There's a couple that have prickers on them that are very nice (as long as you don't need to climb in/around them...)

Bob mentioned something in the shovel thread that got me thinking...

How about (and I'm sure my spelling is wrong on each so use phonetics) Hosta, Lilies or similar... Damn near free although they're not all 4 seasons. Not sure about your leaf situation, but I do appreciate that I can cut them off at ground level in the fall so the leaves pass right by. Bushes will collect the fall leaves.

Are deer an issue in your area? Leyland Cypress are nice bush/tree that can be groomed into a hedge. They grow like stink so you can buy 6 inch seedlings and they will be 10 feet in 3-4 years.

If you find a cheap source for Boxwood online please share.

We order most of our plants and trees from Musser Forests, Inc. (They are actually right down the road from Brian). They have boxwoods for as low as $2.75 per plant.

These particular boxwoods are the ones I am thinking of.

I would like to plant some Mountain Laurel in amongst the pine trees on the north edge of the property, but they are fatal to horses if eaten. :( Bumms me out because the Laurel would really remind me of my grandma and grandpas place in WV. :o

There are really very few deer in my area , because they would have to pack an overnight bag to make it from the nearest cover to my property. :pat: Supposedly, deer don't bother boxwoods anyway.

We had a whole bunch of Hostas at our old house, and we would dig them up every year, and split each one into four sections and re-plant them. I actually sprayed a whole bunch of them once with Roundup, and they came right back the next year.

Go with the Boxwoods. They are nice and that is a good price. You can always mix things up and stagger in some variety.

I just got a catalog from Musser yesterday. I'm not sure why, I've never ordered from them but I suspect they are all part of some big nursery conglomerate.

Landscaping ideas

You need at least one or 2 “fancy” plants as focal points. Remember, the way the outside looks is a direct reflection on the way most people will expect the inside to look; it’s also a reflection on the people that live there.
I also enjoy ornamental grasses, and they aren’t that expensive.
Any room for trees?
