KT3 tires

Making some progress on the Kristi finally. Engine has been gone through and carb rebuilt…starts and runs beautifully now.

Ready to start assembling the tracks, but want to clean up the wheels and replace tires before putting tracks back on. Will be foam filling leading and trailing tires. I’m having the them dismounted today, then will take the wheels for powder coating. The tire shop is having a bit of trouble finding a match to replace the tires. The existing are about 20.5” overall diameter. The tires he is finding available are closer to 22” diameter. Will that matter? What have others sourced when replacing tires?

Thanks!

We did order in some tires at some juncture and precise size is important, particularly for the front and year. Seems they might have been light aircraft tires. Will check and post more info.
We have never gone to foam-fill for a couple of reasons. Seems to us that air filled tires offer a little more “give” when encountering the grousers and may wear better for that reason. Second is less weight in the tracks with the limited hp.

Thank you, please do let me know what you find. I take it you have not had any problems with the non-foam tires? I wondered about whether the extra weight would be an issue. I'm just paranoid I will end up stuck, but i suppose in a pinch one might be able to move one of the middle tires to the leading or trailing edge to limp home? Wish I could find an extra wheel that fit to keep as a spare somewhere.

I suppose it would be wise to try measuring the wheel to see if it is a standard available size...

Good to hear you are making progress on the Kristi! In regards to your tire question, the Kristi owners manual specifies a 6.00-9 6-ply tire for the KT-3 model, which may be a standard trailer tire size. The manual also says the hub and seals are standard front wheel Ford. I believe they were using the same size tire/wheel on the Kristi built trailers.

Our KT3 tires are Generals 6.9/6.0 6 and 8 ply. We were able to source some Carlisle USA Trails in 6.9/9 which we use for the bogie positions. The “aspect” on these was a little too tall — the wall from the rim to top of tire. When placed on the drive position seemed too close to the sprocket.

No, we have not had issues with tires in the field. Keep a pretty close eye on pressure and track tension when running. Try to protect them when left outdoors for any length of time.
