I remember seeing that on Mythbusters. I don't remember the show exactly, but I do remember that they had to have the car at an extremely hot temperature for the cannister to burst. Even then I don't think it actually flew far enough to hit someone.

I believe the explanation was lacking. The canister will break if it is mishandled and subjected to a sharp blow like a soup can hitting it on the seam.

We've had several cans explode over the years. An out of date can blew in the frig a couple of days ago.
