Just bought a "New iPad" aka iPad 3

Melen is going away to college for a summer session and it was strongly recommended she take a lap top. I honestly didn't want to buy her one now because she has a perfectly good desktop computer AND she still has one more year of high school before she goes to college full time. I figure technology a year from now will be better/cheaper and will get her a new laptop before she officially starts college.

SO . . . not sure if this was smart . . . I am giving her my MacBook Pro to take to college this summer. I'm backing up all my data onto an iMac that sits on my desk, and am converting over to a basic Wi-Fi iPad for toting around during the day.

Stopped off at SAMS CLUB, picked up the iPad for $489, bought a Belkin bluetooth keyboard/iPad case and built myself a mini-laptop sort of thing. I'm typing this post on it now while my computer sync's up with the iPad.

Anyone have any "APPS" they want to recommend as being particularly useful, fun or otherwise?

It can be only one of two things. Either you really, really love Melen and only want the best for her ... or ... you have absolutely no shame in implicating the young lady in devilish schemes so that Dad can get himself some new toys. First, a dandy little 20 ga. and now a new iPad.

I just got the Ipad 3 about three months ago, well the first day they were available. I got the one with the 4G built into it. Yes way more expensive but has come in extremely handy.

My favorite app is "LogMeIn" It allows me to take control of my desktop back at the office so I can do anything that I wish to do no matter where I am. The standard version is free but I paid for the subscription so I can lock out the sound, the keyboard and the monitor so if using the program and someone is sitting at my desk they can't see what I am doing. You can do this also with yours Bob but you only can when connected to WiFi.

The kids like FaceTime. It's a video phone thingy. I believe it comes with your iPad.

You are smarter than you look!

For the price of that Ipad you could have bought a really nice laptop.

I've never seen a really nice laptop for $500. I've seen a lot of cheap ones for that price and heard a lot of people complain about them too.

I bought the iPad because it is, in theory, 100% compatible with what I already own, and uses the same software that I already own, saving me lots of money.

I see FaceTime is included on the iPad. Do you know if the corresponding software for the MacBook Pro is also called FaceTime?

Bob, here's some apps I have

Ibooks

Kindle

Compass ( might have come with the ipad, don't remember)

The Weather Channel

Mahjonng

Civil War Today

Eric's Solitare

Gas Buddy

Printer Pro (theres a free test app to make sure it works with your printer)

YP Mobile yellow pages

Wi-Fi Finder, just got this one don't know how good it is

Printer Pro, that looks like a good one to have! I'll check it out. I loaded up 2 different weather programs, one of which is Weather Channel.

Me either. I need to buy two for the two I have in college next year. Both want MacBook Pro 14" or 15" machines. Apple is hard headed about some things, and that's frustrating but, overall, I can see why they dominate on every college campus now. My "cheap" $700 15" laptop I bought last year really is a turd compared to the new offerings from Mac. Not always, but a reasonable amount of the time, you do in fact get what you pay for.

I use my 64gb (no phone service; wifi only) iPad 2 last year and we pretty well use it every day. We watched 4 full length movies on it on the way to Kalifornia (with all our layovers) and it still had plenty of battery life to spare. Not really sure how, but once we were at our hotel, the "MagicJack" app on it worked fine so I could make regular calls with it or video chats. It seems to pull in wifi signals 10X better than any other brand laptop (not counting MacBooks) I've ever had.

I bought the case with the keyboard but now only use the 'protective' only leather case since I've gotten used to typing on it. I just wish Apple would break down and put a SD slot in it.

*edit*
I've used "WebPrint" app on it for about a year now and I can print on any of the 4 printers I have on our network; which really isn't that often.

I too have an ipad, but according to my daughter I am a technophobe, so I need instruction how to use it, but surely this is what daughters are for?

It looks like FaceTime is on all Apple products (iPod touch, iPad, MacBook & iPhone 4).

When someone tries to contact you, it calls all compatible Apple products you own and you can answer the call on any of them.

Jim/Brent: More digging around on this thing and it appears that I don't need a printer application. Apparently the new OS that comes with the New iPad includes the ability to print. I started messing around and on documents it gives you the option to print, no App needed, it found the new HP All-In-One printer on my network.

BC: FACE TIME, yup it looks like that is on all our Macs, now I have learn myself how to use it!

Anita: Zoe is right, you are a technophobe, but you are also correct, daughter are there to teach us adults how to use this stuff. Tell her I said so!

Any other suggestions on favorite APPs for this thing? I can already tell that I'm going to have to relearn things, or perhaps more accurately learn how ot store my APPS in some sort of priority so I'm not constantly going from screen to screen to find them.

Just fired up the Mrs. iPad.

For FaceTime, it appears all you have to do is define contacts via their e-mail address. To be a recipient, I believe you have to set up e-mail on your device. I did it last winter and thought it only took a couple minutes to set up each device

Something else - Does it come with an app for reading PDF's? If you can't open PDF's with native software, you may have to "get an app for that".

So now I have an iPad too. Never thought that would happen. So tell me, how do you upload pictures?

There are a few ways.

By sync'ing with your computer.
By using the "cloud" to wirelessly load them from your computer.
By attaching the camera, or camera's data card, into the optional port that plugs into the bottom of the iPad.

I will pass this along to Jan . Then , she can show me how do do it which I will quickly forget how to do . :(
