Just bought a 1404 - Few Questions

Just bought a 1404, and I have a few questions.

-1) Is there enough room between the track and cab to run the exhaust? Mine currently terminates right under the passenger side cab. I want to add some sort of muffler and either pipe it up, or out the back.

-2) How do you turn on the rear heater? I haven't dug into the electrical yet and am not sure if it's suppose to come on with the front, or has a separate switch?

Any info would be great!:whistling:

My 1404 originally had the exhaust running up the back of the cab, but as part of the purchase I had Bill Guthrie reroute the exhaust straight out the back and then install some bench seating. That worked fine for several seasons, but eventually the tracks lifted up during higher speed travel and ripped off the brackets holding the exhaust in place. Here's some photos of how the exhaust was routed.

Last spring I had Bill's exhaust replaced with a stainless steel system. I was careful to tuck the pipe up as high as possible then installed a muffler at the very back behind the sprocket. Sorry, but I don't have any photos handy. I also tightened up the tracks a bit. We didn't get a lot of snow this past winter, but the few times I had the cat out the new configuration seemed to work OK -- no indications that the grousers were scraping the bottom side of the exhaust pipe.

I have a 1404 also the exhaust runs over the passenger side track and has a muffler and a short 90 at the sprocket I have heard the grouser hit the brackets also.

I have not had a high speed encounter. but with the wide tracks and off-camber stuff the grousers hitting is inevitable.

Mine was routed under, a 90 then up the right side of the cab vertical. Not sure if I'll keep that configuration, or try what you guys have. I for sure want quieter. Guy used flex pipe on mine. It's rusted out a hole at the low point.

Rear heater, is yours full cab (as in front/rear joined)???

In my 1450 there is a switch on the dash that activates the fans on the heater core for the rear cab, I'm sure it runs through a relay somewhere as well, plus make sure that heater core's coolant lines arent bypassed, or have a shutoff valve on them.

:wink::clap:

Nixion don't count on relays my 2100 manufactured in 1972 has no relay except for the electric emergency hydraulic motor and starter solenoid every thing is wired and actuated through switches. my wiring except for a couple of additional lights are all original

Yep! There's a little pod heated about mid cab...has coolant lines to it and everything (with petcocks) Found the problem.....fan motors work much better when they are plugged in.:clap:

For sure... :)

Mine were unplugged on the actual switch on the dash, seems like someone messed with it, but never put it together the right way.

Hi XJ. I was looking at the close up of your track in post #2. I could be mistaken but it looks like your grouser clamps are upside down. The curved side should be towards the belt to keep the edges of the clamp from digging into the belt as it goes around the sprocket and idler. You may want to check it out.

Yup -- those are my tracks.

I'll take a look at the aluminum grouser backing plates -- some of them very well could be upside down. I'm slowly working up to rebuilding my tracks and will probably do so next summer (or maybe the next...). I've collected new belts, extra grousers, track jacks, and hardware -- all I need now is the motivation. Unfortunately, the lack of snow and subsequent inability to use the cat undermines my desire to work on it. But I suppose I'll need to get it all gussied up for the big party on Mt. Hood next spring -- it would be mortifying to show up with upside down backing plates. We have to uphold Thiokol's superior reputation relative all those lesser machines...

Ron

Hey cloud cap,

You really think putting the backing plate on right side up will help your Thiocull keep up with Orange?

And the arm chair jousting begins. Love it.

Being that the featured machine is neither........
