J5 tear down

buster

New member
Started tearing down the old bombardier. Drained 3 gallons of clear water out of engine. Its been setting in the junk yard for at least 2 years so that motors going back to the junk yard. While I was there I picked up a Ford 300-6 to rebuild. Also found a hydraulic winch off of an old ramp truck. Removed the tracks and tires. Looks like I am going to need 50 or 60 track cleats and probably 3 tires. If anyone knows where I can get these I would appreciate the info.

Opened the differential cover and found it too was full of water. I removed the differential and it looks in good shape. I have removed every thing else and nothing seems to be that bad. I cut the differential case out of the old hull. All thats left is the two axles. The steel for the new hull should arrive next week. I'll be happy to get started on the new hull. I am making it 2" deeper and 6" longer.

Nice machine, i like the manifold set up on that engine! I should have taken some pics of my diff when i had the cover off, it was dry and it looked brand new.

looks like you have your work cut out for you the pay off is going to be the fun in the years of driving it around when you are done i've enjoyed my snow trac so much sinse ive got it going heck my wife even enjoys it the first trip accross the tundra before the snow fell the only thing she had to say was i did good on this one she is an out door person but after fighting the handle bars of a quad for a few hours she admits that tracks are the way to go feel good when you get there.
