J5 Engine overhaul

I just bought my first J5 about a month ago. The guy told me he never had a hitch with the motor.... WEll I have gotten about 4 hrs use out of the machine and it blows oil out of the blow boy an awful lot. Last time I used it I got a noise in the engine and I limped it home and shut it off. It is a chrsyler flathead. I need the engine taken out to bring it to a machine/motor rebuild shop for an overhaul. I am not a mechanic, yet am fairly inclined. Is taking the motor out of a J5 a big job? Is it something that a novice may be able to do? I have one quote from a shop and they wanted $1000.00 to take the motor out and reinstall. That seemed a little high. Any insight welcome. Thanks

Darryl

not as bad as a car/truck, very straight foreward:remove engine cover, drain cooling, remove rad, wiring, fuel, linkage, disconnect driveshaft, 2 bolts below pulleys, 2 @ trans, lift and tilt.
