J5 differential capacity

new to this.have a j5 and it turns good on packed snow but poor in soft snow.looked in frt. diff and has about 5 gals of what think is 90W gear oil.going to change to tdh oil.how many gal. should the diff, have in it?think this might help the steering problem?thxs in advance for any help.

J5's do not turn well in powder. If the unbraked track is in powder then it will just spin in the snow until it can connect with something solid then it will turn good. J5's are good in snow until it gets 18-20" deep. Then I just stay on my packed wood pile trails the rest of the winter. I've never been stuck in deep snow because it plows through it but just don't steer worth a crap. I avoid struggling in deep snow because I think its hard on the steering brake bands. Differental oil capacity on the J5 is 4 gallons. Manual recommends non hypoid SAE 90wt gear oil. I use the Catapeller wet brake fluid. TDO4 I think? Works good in all seasons. I can get the exact oil name if you want it.

thanks for the info.do you think changing the diff oil to the one you mention might help it turn alittle better,or just a waste of cash?

Change it. Differentials tend to accumulate moisture. For $100 you start fresh and know what lube is in there. And it will steer better in cold weather. But buy a different machine for deep powder snow. You have an awsome, bulletproof, workhorse pulling machine that is built to go through mud, muskeg and heavy brush at near idle. Slow and steady goes through or around about anything in the woods while pulling a heavy loaded trailer. What is your intended primary use for your J5? Send me your email and I will give you the J5 manuals I have. Let's see some photos!
