J5 complete almost

buster

New member
Here are a few pics of my completed J5. I still have the overheating issue. Went out today and pulled in a few trees. I have time to do one twitch before it gets too hot. I did one this morning and one this afternoon letting it cool down between.
Only took me 4 years to get to this point. I want to thank everyone for all the advice, tips and suggestions. Love this forum.

Looks good

On your overheating: my radiator is higher out of the tub and I built a shroud so the air is directed to the radiator and not coming over the top like yours could.

:wow:Well done,

hope to start restoration on mine early spring. Will be looking for advice  would be really interested in picture of your hydraulic pump set up.

Looks beautiful! And one heck of a workhorse too!!
I agree with Pixi. Higher positioned radiator and for sure you need a fan shroud on a "puller" fan system.

Ditto on the rad height and shroud Buster. Looks great , its come a long way from those scrapyard pics. Glad you stuck with it, and whats your next project ?
All the best . J5 Bombardier:hammer:

Buster : After glancing at the pics again , the red heater hose beside the upper rad hose is that a jumper where the heater core tapped in and out on this ford ? If so you might want to plug the holes ,just in case the water pump is taking the easy route and not pushing enough through the rad.

Having just put a new water pump on a 4.9 L or 300, I think you are really onto something with that red hose. Looks like it is just making a loop, and with no restriction, like a heater core. It is robbing the water pump of volume... For a test he could take a vice grip and pinch it off to see if it helps...

Thanks for the tip guys, I will eliminate that heater hose and see what it does. As far as the radiator location I couldn't lift it higher without lifting the engine so that's out unless I get rid of the motor fan and maybe install an electric one. I did have a shroud on it before I changed radiators. It didn't seem to help before so I left it off.

Nice catch J5 Bombardier. Plugged off the red hose and it is fine now. Ran it for 1 1/2 hours and pulled out 3 hitches and it never went above 190deg. I only wish I had shown you that picture last year. It sure would have saved me a lot of grief. I had originally planned to plug them off but in my haste it was easier to just connect it. I feel a little stupid for all the work I needlessly put myself through for such a little job ( took me 10 minutes to plug it off). Well alls well that ends well. Thanks to all of you for taking an interest. Great forum!

Here's a few pics from finding this J5 in July of 2009 to the present
