J5 axle seals orientation

Hello all, I was wondering what orientation the two axle seals. I removed seals and the spring is towards the inside of the axle which should not allow oil out but allow mud in. The manual shows the springs going out side allowing oil out but keep dirt out. The problem with having the springs out they rip out when the assembly is placed on the shaft. The lip catches on the shaft folding the lip back releasing the spring. I got pissed off and put one together without the spring after taking it apart 5 times. Any advice would be appreciated.

Myself I put the springs toward the oil, pack the outer with grease so it won't burn out. They are pretty pricey, Mr Bombardier's custom seals, next time I'm dealing with these, I'll try for a generic match on the inside dia and modify the aluminum cover for what ever the outer dia is.

I think this is one of best questions regarding the J5. I have replaced these "gems" on two of my machines, and getting reading to do one more axle on the 3rd machine I have. First off the seal are of very poor quality and the springs do not stay on the seal so I have to put them facing each other so the get the "sandwich" treatment. On the last rebuild this has worked, with no leakage. With these seals being near $70cdn this is outrageous. I have the aluminum cap made at a machine shop with close tolerance so the space between the alxe OD and the Alum cap is very close.
I am looking to find a replacement also as this poor quality is just nuts... thanks maybe to this new world we seem to be living in.........!!!!
I am in my third differential rebuild including the axle seals so any input is greatly appreciated.
