Is outwear different by sex?

I was thinking of getting new coats/parkas from Mrs. Zoom and my daughter.

I don't know how to shop the woman's or kids departments (of online stores in particular). Besides their "style" and "pretty colors", are they shaped different? Can I just get a mans coat in their size?

This won't be formal-wear or anything. Just for daily use. My daughter seems OK with not "pretty-ish" outerwear (and normally wears my lined Carhartt denim jacket to school and around town and doesn't hesitate to grab a camo jacket either).

OT but with outwear and sex in the title we should get some interesting hits on this thread. I was going to play on words and change it to wear out and sex but since you are talking about your wife and daughter I sure won't do that. :hide:

As for your question ...the outfits all look similar to me, but I have not gone sking in years and do not own a ski suit. IOW I don't know.

Men's and women's shirts button differently. With men's shirts the buttons are on the right and the button holes are on the left. Women's are reversed. I would presume the same is true of outerwear????

yup.
the cut is slightly different as well - men's/unisex is generally wider through the chest and shoulders proportionally.
That said, for a "chore coat" type application, just buy one size down and they'll have room to layer.
check clearance racks at Bass Pro/Cabela's/Gander -- they often have returns and/or last year's patter pretty cheap.
A couple years back we got SWMBO a really nice Columbia 3 in 1 parka right after new year's for $50 - reg price was $180.

Yes there is a big difference in men's and women's clothing. Especially if you are talking a petite female.
If it is labeled unisex expect it to run big as well. Don't know what kind of sites you are shopping, but some catalogs like lands end will show male
and female versions of the same object.

If you insist on getting the mans size, I would go a size smaller than what that person would normally wear.

Also, if you are not sure as to what size your wife wears go to her closet and look at the label

Hopes this helps, and happy shopping

Take your daughter shopping to help you with for your wife's stuff. Take your wife to help you with your daughter's stuff. This way you get quality time with both of them and have a better chance of having the right stuff.

Thanks for the info Judy.

My daughter is the easy one to get clothes for. I know she fits in the jackets, T-shirts... I just grew out of. When I hit the ladies departments at stores, I just ask someone if they can translate the woman's size (why do they have so many) into a male version of S, M, L. BTW, this is only at the finer clothing shops, like Tractor Supply. My daughter's favorite T-shirts say things like "Will Trade Boyfriend For Tractor" (and will have a John Deere logo below that).

My wife buys a lot her stuff in the boys department. She likes the longer coats better. TSC is a good place for ladies and girls clothes. I seldom buy her any clothes. I get in enough trouble without trying!
