TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran raised the prospect on Tuesday of sending military ships close to the United States' Atlantic coast, in what would be a major escalation of tensions between the long-standing adversaries.
"Like the arrogant powers that are present near our marine borders, we will also have a powerful presence close to American marine borders," the head of the Navy, Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said, according to the official IRNA news agency.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 31st anniversary of the start of the 1980-1988 war with Iraq, Sayyari gave no details of when such a deployment could happen or the number or type of vessels to be used.
The declaration comes just weeks after Turkey said it would host a NATO early warning radar system which will help spot missile threats from outside Europe, including potentially from Iran. The decision has angered Tehran which had enjoyed close relations with Ankara.
And it comes a few months after Iran sent warships through the Suez canal, after the fall of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the first time the Islamic Republic had deployed navy vessels in the Mediterranean.
The United States and Israel have not ruled out military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to stop it getting nuclear weapons. Tehran denies it is developing nuclear arms saying its atomic program is for purely peaceful purposes.
Iran has dismissed the threats, warning that it will respond by hitting U.S. interests in the Gulf and Israel if any such attack happened.
Analysts say Tehran could retaliate by launching hit-and-run strikes in the Gulf and by closing the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway where about 40 percent of all traded oil passes.
The Islamic state often launches military drills in the country to display its military capabilities amid persistent speculation about a possible U.S. or Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities

Bring it on.
We'll just pull in beside it with a Destroyer.
If they have the balls to go toe-to-toe, let's see it.

Like that joke (or was it real?) about the flight controller in Iran arguing with a pilot as to whether the aircraft was over Iranian airspace. The controller threatened to send up fighter jets. The pilots response was he was a USMC F/A-18 and he'll wait for them to arise.

ROTFL !! silly Habibola

ya, I say bring it , we need a few more artificial reefs for fish. Chances are they'd get 1 warning they were violating our waters, then suddenly blow up and sink. Submarines make surface ships do funny things like that

I hope afterward, their "new" navy ships have glass bottoms. This way they can see their "old" navy ships after this fiasco.

Yep, they're just posturing. Its hilarious that they would believe that such a pursuit in futility would cause us to feel threatened. They'd be out there in international waters for starters, for they dare not come closer.

This may have been posted before - the only ones with any tension would be the poor Iranian sailors, scared shitless as to why they were being brought to our coast. Notice the might of Iranian Aircraft Carriers.....

Iran fought in a war with Iraq for 8 years and it came out as a stalemate.

I think the Iranian's need to call over to the Iraqi's and ask them how they fared in either of the Gulf Wars where they met the US Armed Services. Let's see. Iran couldn't take Iraq in 8 years. We took them in each war in traditional combat fashion in a matter of days.

It is nice to know we have such a large navy compared with the rest of the world. But, it is too bad we can no longer afford it because we keep pissing away giving it away to friends and foes alike.

Thats it for the UK. They flew Libyan raids with land based hardware.

The smaller assault carriers are much bigger bang for the buck.

Putin wants these in the worst way to project power. The stumbling block has been outfitting with electronics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_ship_Mistral_(L9013)
That's NATO France selling hardware...

Russian general said he could have taken Georgia back in 2008 within hours with just one of these.

Welcome tothe forum Enceladus

It is a shame we cannot afford the toys we built for our navy. But Foreign aid is unlikely equal in cost to supporting a military.

We cannot afford these capital ships because;
We can no longer support them with revenues
We cannot build them any more anyway
And the major eneimies who would face them can blow them up with one nuke.

Surface ship groups are big targets we can no longer hide from satilite technoloogies we no longer put in the sky by ourselves. China oputs up their own. Russia puts up thir own. Japan puts up their own.

When North Korea or Iran can launch a missle using their long standing friendships with either of those nations, our boys and girls are toast.

If they were ever to be deemed a threat our fast attack subs will be more than happy to take them out long before they ever see a US Navy surface ship. I sincerely doubt their ASW skills are up to par to track the likes of the USS Seawolf. As a Navy veteran who did ASW in the Denmark Straits & Greenland Sea I have to laugh at the thought of all this. Quite amusing really.

That wouldn't be a good thing. They don't have the same sensibilities as the Russians had, "you shoot, we shoot" only works when you don't want be extinct! The Irianian mentality is to die and get all the virgin crap. They fully want to go back to the 6th Century. They more than likely have a nuke now, may be crude, but parking one of our ships next to theirs would invite such an encounter. The sailors on their ship wouldn't even be aware that they are bait.

Basically they are a threat to our country, if they show up anywhere out of the sandbox, they should be sank. They do have a fear of death when it's not in their sick view of gods name. You don't wait til cancer overtakes you before you address it.

Yeah it was probably a joke, big differance between fighter and airliner on a scope in a war zone. Still was a good one too!
