Interesting place for a birds nest

Went to go get the chairs to sit out on the lawn with the dogs and got a surprise.

Gray chair has a birds nest inside of it.

Apologies for the blurry pic of the bird (not my avatar:D), best I could get.

Last night had some severe T-storms and winds, and the one chair blew over, so we decided to move the gray chair under walkway to the front door off the house (thinking if that chair blew over with the nest and eggs where the chair was at the eggs would be destoyed). Well, moved the chair (more secure location out of the wind), and momma bird wasn't there, but this morning out with the dogs, and she (momma bird) found where me moved the chair to.

Made me notice how many bird eggs and nest I've found around the house and how many actually "don't make it".

nice post and pictures DZ....do you know what type of bird you have nesting there??

I'm not into birds (no jokes please), but I'm guess some sort of sparrow.

Four eggs in the nest.

It will be interesting with the nest so low to the ground keeping the dogs away if and when it's time for them to leave their nest.

Go here and check it out by identifying the eggs. Sialis If it is a House Sparrow please get rid of it. The House Sparrow is not protected by any laws and is not Native to the United States. They are very aggressive and will just about kill any Cavity Song Bird around and have been the pretty much the whole reason the population of Blue Birds have diminished. Great strides are being taken to bring the Blue Bird back and it is soley due to control of the House Sparrow.

edit. there is other sparrows out there so be careful as they are protected and don't do any harm. Such as the Song Sparrow and Tree Sparrow

Murph, thanks for the info, but honestly, I don't kill an animal unless I'm going to eat it, it's severely injured (sp?) or for some reason it's a threat to myself or family members.

Funny you mentioned the Blue Bird. My Granfather in law HATES them and tells me they're one of the most agressive birds around (and tells me I should kill them as well).

There is only one type of bird nest i would destroy along with the eggs and that of the pigeon.

here we are overcrowded with the buggers and they are vermin....i like to call them rats with wings.

DZ maybe put a small temp wooden closure round the nest until they are happily flown away just to keep the dogs from sticking their nose in...a bit like a child fire guard.

Already brought one of the wire fences used for the garden up by the house when the time comes:thumb:

Funny how a simple birds nest can remind you how fragile life is.

I am on my 4th year monitoring and raising blue birds and have never heard that. I go up to their nests every night and check in on them and the little ones. Never have I been chased or flown over.

Per my grandfather in law, the blue birds are very aggressive towards other birds and will chase and harrass those birds in the area.

Hoenstly, don't know if he's right or wrong.

I don't know DZ. I sit and watch them from my deck and back yard all the time and never see them chase or harrass any of the other birds. I do know that the House Sparrows will go into the nests of other cavity nest birds and take over the nest even if it means killing the mother to do it.

I hope your not mixing up the blue birds with the blue jays? I now blue jays are very aggressive and mean.

I think you may be right:doh: (Homer Simpson real loud)

Like I said, I'm not really into birds.

At least I got "blue" right:D

bluebirds are around here all the time, they dont bother anything. We actually found one this year, to young and scared to fly. WE have a bird lady nearby that rehabs and releases so we took it to her.

bluejays are a bit aggresive, but they are around here too

DZ, is that a nice woven in a circle in the middle or is it kind of a mess made with all kinds of different grasses and junk?

You can say that again!!
There is one that teases the next door neighbour's cat.
It has to be the same bird.
It dive bombs Charlie (the orange tabby) often lol
I also watched one that appeared to be attacking a pigeon on the lawn of the public library one day.
They're loud too.

And sometimes confused for a Blue Jay, the Steller Jay (most likely the aggressive bird) - but apparently isn't found on the East Coast.

House Sparrow and they are very aggressive in killing other Cavity Nesting Birds. They are not protected by any US laws and at one time there was a bounty on them. Get rid of House Sparrows when you have the chance.

Honestly Murph, no clue. I used the zoom on the lens, and haven't gotten that close to notice it without you mentioning it.

Looking at the beak of the mother, it's not a house sparrow (from the good pic you posted). Beak looks to be narrower, and brown, not black.

DZ,

The male is easy to pick out, the female is not so easy. Look for the lighter streak through the eyes.

Well, in one day, and all the birds are gone.

Grandfather came over the other day and mentioned that the birds looked like a Carolina Wren.

DZ,

Usually a wren or should I say almost all of the time will make nests out of sticks. And if the entrance opening is more than 1" they won't make a nest there.

But hey congratulations your now a proud father of some birds out there.
