She gives me a reason to watch at least one open wheel race, in Indiana, where I not only don't understand all the tech in the cars, but couldn't even afford just the steering wheel on a 30 year payment plan. Call me cynical, but I'd love to see her win the Indy 500. I may be wrong, but nobody seems to have told her that she doesn't have what it takes to win it. From what I've seen, she has the attitude of a genuine competitor.

Agreed. She may not be the best driver out there but she doesn't seem to care and doesn't seem to let anyone hold her back.

BTW, I had an opportunity to buy a Formula 1 helmet once worn by Michael Schuemacker of the Ferrari team. Price tag was $5000. WTF? I passed on that one. But I suspect the steering wheel would have fetched a higher price.

I was told that the complicated and sophisticated steering wheel in an F1 car costs the teams about $35k and up, depending on what custom items they want. I wouldn't think it would be wise for them to get pissed about something and fling that steering wheel in anger when they get out of their racing machine.

BTW, even with my neanderthal stage I am aware that Danica doesn't race F1. :)

Yes, I am aware, I was just comparing costs of things. Indy car is much cheaper than F1. I'm guessing an Indy car steering wheel is only $20,000

Danica is not as much fun to watch in a car:yum::yum::yum:

But saying that i would love to see her in F1....look at the money she brings with her and F1 is 100% about throwing away money....thats why it's called Formula 1...a pure 100% formula of it's own that only money can buy....i cant get enough of it.

Now ya all made me put on my old racing head.

Oh, I wasn't at all implying that you didn't know the difference. I just thought you may be surprised that I at least knew that much. You know, I practically have to carry a club with me and be able to recite the last NASCAR statistics to be able to talk with some of my clients. Indy Car and F1 are clearly in a totally different league on many levels.

Honestly, I just can't watch NASCAR. I know its a big deal, but I don't understand why!

To my mind, open wheel race cars are the real thing. Indy and F1 are the things to watch!!! I don't really follow either of them, but if I'm going to watch racing, it will be one of those. And F1 is a lot better than Indy car, heck F1 cars turn BOTH directions :hammer:

I honestly prefer nascar over F1 or indy. I guess it has to do with the fact that I grew up going to the local dirt track with my dad every weekend and watching the races from the pits. My dad, uncle, and another guy owned a car and raced it every weekend. I was born in '77 and can remember watching nascar races on tv from the early '80's. Nothing against F1 or indy though. I have respect for anyone that can strap themselves into a car and go 200+mph for 4 hours straight only inches away from another car going the same speed. BTW, tv doesn't do nascar justice. Until someone actually goes to a live race and smells the burning rubber as the cars come flying out of the corner at them, they just won't get it. It's a rush. You can watch it on tv all your life but until you actually go to a live race and hear the engines roar and smell the burning rubber and race fuel etc, you just won't get the full picture. Short track racing is where its at.

I like most all racing. I used to watch some NASCAR, but the cars have evolved in to nothing related to a stock car. Still like it, but don't watch a lot.

I like watching the local short tracks, although I did enjoy watching Busch type cars at Sears Point.

The Sacramento area actually has a lot of racing going on, with more in the local vicinities.

We have a paved oval 45 minutes from here, All American Speedway. From the '40's to the '71 it was dirt. My Dad and Grandfather ran a car out there in the 50's to early 60's, when they would have had to make the final switch from flatheads of overhead valves. It is a great track, lots of history, and has always had good racing.

There's a small track for kids in 1/4 midget type cars.

10 minutes from here, we have a 1/4 mile dirt track, Placerville Speedway. They get some pretty good sprint car races.

For a ton of fun, about 45 miles away we have an old track that was shortened to 1/8 mile, and runs speedway flat track motorcycles. Fast Fridays runs on the old track in Auburn. 0-60 in 2 seconds, no brakes. Very cool to watch.

There's Prairie City OHV outside Folsom. The "Hangtown Classic" national championship dirt bike race is held there. They also have mud drags, other dirt bike races, mountian bike races, and go cart races.

Sacramento Raceway has a dirt oval with sprints, a moto-x track, and drag strip.

Stokton and Altamont are a little over an hour away. Altamont is a paved oval, and also the site of a famous Rolling Stones concert.

Calistoga is 1.5 hours away. they have a scary fast dirt track. Scary fast. Outlaws run there.

Chico has a really nice dirt track, about 1.5 hours away.

The drag strip and road course of Sears Point(Infineon raceway) is 1.5 hours away. Nascar runs there for a 350km race, as well as the big boys in drag racing, Formula-1, and Indy car.

Carson City Nv is less than 1.5 hours from here. They have a short track.

Wow, that is actually a lot of tracks!

Years ago Nevada used to close the road up to Virginia City and run a sports car race (or time trials started separately?) right on the public highway.

Does that still exist?

I wish we still had a track around here. Ours closed down in the late 80's. Up until a few years ago, the closest one to me was a 3 hour drive. I'm pretty sure theres none left there now. Kinda sucks.
