Imp ford 104 timing

I can't remember where the timing is set on my 104 . I would check with Ford Power products . Those guys are sharp !!!
 
The information I have says 8 degrees before TDC (same as you), but I have no information on what RPM you use or whether the vacuum advance is connected or not. Plus, it is nigh on to impossible to actually see the timing marks on the front of the engine (i.e., I had to use a mirror, and even then it was a contortionist's nightmare). Eventually I just set the engine to TDC and "snap-timed" the distributor. If you've not done this before then you just slowly twist the distributor back toward the point where the #1 cylinder fires and when the points open up you'll hear a "snap". And that's where you lock down the distributor. This doesn't feel as precise as I'd like and it denies me the chance to use my fancy smancy timing light, but it seems to work.

My book says 10 degree for ford vacuum advance distributors
Vacuum line disconnected idling at 700 RPM

Thanks...I'll try not to get my nose caught in the alt belt. Who engineered this thing. I found out today that to remove the filler plug and fill the o-4 trans, I need to remove the slave cylinder bracket and use a little tiny bottle cap to fill it up! You guessed it I'm a new owner.

Ron, I assume the point gap needs to be right on when you preform that snap process correct?

On my imp, I gave up trying to feed my head into the alternator and pulled the vacumn advance line off. Plugged it. then hooked up a vacum gauge to manifold vacumn and then advanced it untill I pulled maximum vacumn then back a little bit.

i forgot about that i had the same problem with a bv206 that had a 6 cylender version of that motor the lifters tighten up as the valve faces wear out. you should see this as a flutter on a vaccuum gauge also point gap and condenser condition are critical to timing clean the points or replace them and the condensor than use snap timing to get it right you can ue=se the vaccuum gauge trick to dial it in better.

Yes -- adjusting the dwell (i.e,. points gap) will change the timing, so you need to set the dwell first and then the timing. I've gone to electronic ignition (Pertronix) on my Imp so it is no longer an issue, but if you're Old School then you need to pay attention to this.

Allright Squirrel, What are the specs. you used on your valves. I wrote some down from a post here somewhere and now can't find the note. I need them too. :whistling:
 
Airdale, There is a big plug in front on top of the transaxle, And a smaller plug on the left for the level of fluid on my TA. You should'nt have to pull anything off to fill or check fluid.
 
Thanks Squirrel, like I said there was another post that someone gave the specs. I lost it. I just spent some time looking this morning and did not come up with it. I am ready to pull the covers now. I really need to do this. they are noisey. I am sure it will make a big difference in the performance department. Like you said. So, Are you Cat'n yet? We only have about a foot of snow here so far. We are going for the cabin for the rest of the winter. Hopefully we will get some more. You folks down south need to send more of yours up here. :brows: Thanks again...
 
lucky you in the intirior we still have no snow out on the west coast i'm about to break the jeep out of hybernation as i can go any place now that it's froze up
 
Oh yeah, I bet Don. And the way the weather patterns have been it don't look good for us I don't think. If it's going to snow then let it snow. Well you can always work on your machines. There is always something to do. Even if it isn't what we'd like. I haven't been up the crick yet. The trail is going to be rough and the river is going to be slick. :winterrul:letitsnow::whistling:

I have a race buddy who is a genious with that motor. He turns 10K rpm all day at road america hard down shifts sliding the rear tires on down shifts. He put me on to the saab sonnet stuff. motors are the same at the core but difference is on the accesory level. Don't be afraid to fire it off with the valve covers off the oil does not fly around to bad. I found a bent push rod that way one time. You can tell because they don't turn.
If you need a 4bbl carb for your imp let me know he builds intakes. 8-)
