I Finally Brokedown And Bought A New ATV

mtntopper

Back On Track
This week I finally traded off my 99 Polaris Sportsman atv for a new Suzuki Kingquad 4X4 atv. The old Polaris has been being getting difficult the past couple years and was to the point I did not trust it anymore. I shopped 3 other brands which were Yamaha, Polaris, and Kawasaki and decided the Kingquad was my choice after riding the new models at the dealerships. I really wanted to look at the new Arctic Cat atv's but we have no dealer anymore in the nearby town I went to this week.

The features I liked best about the Suzuki are the locking differentials, larger seating for two than the Yamaha, the price was better for a full feature atv, manual rope start if required, the instrument panel is easy to see, wide handle bars, large foot area, and the legendary Kingquad off road abilities. The Yamaha Grizzly with power steering was sweet but also about $1800.00 more in price. Hell, I am a man and I don't need power steering on my atv. Maybe Pigtails won't steal this one if it does not have power steering. The Polaris was a very nice 07 leftover model but the price was still about $900.00 more than the 08 Kingquad. Time will tell if I made the right decision. We use our atv's almost daily where we live and use them hard during mud season when the snow is leaving/gone and we can not drive either the snow cat or a regular vehicle in and out of home.

Pigtails has been after me for two years to get a new one but she kept her 99 Polaris Sportsman???? As usual the female gets her way. I am sure a new something will appear for her benefit. I just hope it is not my new atv that she appropriates.

What do you use it for and why did you buy one of those instead of something that seats 2 side by side?

I just hope it is not my new ...FILL IN THE BLANK... that she appropriates.

That is what usually happens at my house!

It is used as an everyday runabout/workhorse instead of a full size vehicle that can not go the places this is able to go. It often pulls a small trailer with tools/supplies around our properties and hauls any and everything when something larger is not needed. We often take atv rides on the FS trails and road system that we live beside. The trail system on the FS limits width to 50 inches and a side by side is not legal on the atv trails. We have looked at the side by side Ranger and Kubota but they are just not as functional for our needs. If it is too big to haul on the atv, we have the Kubota tractor, pickups and various sized trailers that can do the job. We live in the forest and the atv's are just right to maneuver in the heavy wooded timber areas and mountainous terrain.

During mud season it is much more agile and less easy to get stuck than anything else that we can use at our mountain home.

I just keep reminding her it was her idea, not mine and hope she forgets why she wanted $$$$$ me to have a new atv. Then again, she has ordered her new S & W Airweight 38 revolver with Crimson Trace grips. I guess she won anyway as I am only getting a cheapy 12 gauge Mossberg Persuader.:w00t:

We have to quit goining to town as it gets way too expensive when we do!!!!!:dizzy:

what engine size and top speed are we looking at here mtn....i love the look but would have preferred something with a little more colour(sorry speed and colour wont mean much to you with it being work purpose and i respect that)i only ask as i have owned a few Quads for off-roading and for gravel track racing.

Sorry I missed your question on my this thread until today. It is a 450cc, top speed is in excess of 55mph and gets there quickly. Speeds above 40mph do not feel safe in an off road atv to me. We normally run very low tire air pressure to prevent puncturing tires in the rough terrain. I have almost 300 hundred miles on it now and it is a great mid sized atv and works very well for me. The price of about 6K makes it affordable as the larger engine sizes in the 700 cc plus range go for about $1500.00 to $2500.00 more. With most of the bigger engine off road atv's you only gain a bigger engine with a higher top speed while paying more money. I am not sure why so many people think they must have the biggest engine available in an off road atv that rarely sees more than 25mph?????
