HP notebook

Galvatron

Spock and Galvatron < one and the same
my sons HP Envy notebook hard drive died and now my problems have started.....

Put in a new hard drive but this bloody thing has no disk drive so needs to be re installed using USB to which i have never done before.....i have set it to boot from usb but i get nothing....any advice would be greeted with open arms.

I use a portable CD / DVD drive for installing that kind of stuff, but it normally hooks up via usb. I found it easier that way.

Have you tried HP? I've got an Envy. When I had problems HP took care of it.

Mine was under warranty, but still, I would recommend their service.

Thanks guys,a portable dvd drive sounds like my best option, and i will give HP a email for a few tips,i told my son a notebook would be a pain in the arse,if problems persist i will reboot it with my size 10 and just buy him a new laptop:brows:

You probably don't have any resident drivers for the usb port to allow it to run a boot from there.

i think you are correct bill, but how the hell do i do this with no o/s....???? could i load up the hard drive in another unit with stuff i need then tranfer it over in some way??

PC's use a priority boot sequence 1- hdd 2- cd/dvd 3- usb etc.

Using an original dvd windows operating system disk will boot and install on a hdd

find the 25 digit serial # for windows - bottom of laptop and key in to activate

absent a dvd drive use another pc with dvd disk and copy to usb making usb bootable

I'd bet your son has a nerdy friend who would fix it up quick in exchange for movie tickets, a new mouse or whatever.
