Barbecue sauce is going global in popularity.

Just ask Joe S. “Bud” Johnson, formerly of Greenwood, who now lives in Raleigh and is proprietor of Joe Bud’s Foods Inc.

Johnson’s “Joe Bud’s Everything Sauce, Original,” an all-natural mustard-based sauce, recently won a gold medal in the barbecue sauce division of an international competition, the 2010 World-Wide Mustard Competition, part of the Napa Valley Mustard Festival.

Judging was in February and winners were announced in March. Awards were presented at the Black Stallion Winery in Napa, Calif.

Competition was open to all commercial mustard producers and agents throughout the world. Each mustard entered had to be available commercially (generally available to grocery or specialty food trade at wholesale level) as of Jan. 1, 2010.

The medal awarded was for best sauce in the barbecue, glaze and marinade category. The competition included 19 categories with more than 300 entries from around the world.
