Homemade Tracked Vehicle

Anyone has any info on whats been used here and how its setup.

I really like the looks of this, and wonder what type of the axle used to drive the tracks? Seems like a Dana44 or something, with just simple oversized brake rotors on the side...

So I presume its a brake steer unit... yet it works with regular non locked differential?

Nixon if you want to do something like that I can get you weasel differentials real cheep. they are planetary steering like your imp and 2 speed.

Feel free to IM me, or email directly @ nikorlov@gmail.com

If that would work, I would love to see what I could build, as long as its priced right. Hate to pay for something and not have it work out.

Jeap your build is cool.

Nik your video is looking like a hagglund trac and some fabrication..

I wear the life right out of dana 44 cross pins with 36" swampers in 4X4 I can't imagine that the cross pin will live any longer with 100% of the torque going across it.

I think if you keep it light and realize the cross pin in the diff is a wear item you should be fine.

My mental DIY cat is going to be large rockwells with sur trac type tractor tracks configuered in a articulated fashion. cumming power, 5 spd auto trans. Bit larger than your target size (super imp) but it will meet my needs...

I'm just thinking if its worth it to mess with the whole build, or save up a little and just buy the SuperImp that I always wanted...

Rockwells???

Yes but not the planetary type.
I am a IH horder, I have choice of dana 44, 60,70. The one ton IH trucks used a rockwell similar to this photo, I will using non steering in this build.
(articulated steer)

how many folks want weasel diffs I can see how many I can come up with and maybe I could do a combined shipment to seattle on a boat next summer and save you all some bucks on shipping.

How many can you get ? All used or NOS ? I would take some. Price ?

This one has big Rockwells :yum: not really a snowcat though.
But it will run over a snowcat real nice.

I'm heading in the direction of the where house where there was once nos diffs this weekend if weather permits. I will have to pull a Nixon and sleep outside overnight to rebuild a gt200 planetary and move the machine to it's new home while the ground is frozen. I will get permission to go look around for the nos diffs and see if I can get a fair price other wise I know of 4 or 5 around here with crap tracks but the diffs should be good used units. what is an oc 12 from a sprite worth I know where one of those are to.

When you host the upper midwest snow cat jamboree and KT-7 expose' you can have tug o war competition, all the cats that show up against that thing.

We can just keep adding snow tracs untill that thing moves.

Oh and if the diffs are reasonable dibbs.

Hope to start on making it move. Next spring considering I think the radiator will
Hold over a hundred gallons of antifreeze could take a while just to fill it.

The radiator is for a train engine 7 feet wide ?and I will need to bring in the fuel tanker truck to fill with diesel I think it holds 300 gallons

Articulated, as in like Tucker...

I hope not too expensive, but I wouldnt mind an OC12 either... LOL

Geee... LOL ... all of the sudden the WEASEL DIFF is so wanted by everyone... LOL :) :) :)

I don't have much need for one other than what we talked about this morning but my experience is that they are tough as nails and have the bonus of being a 2 speed unit with a nice high road gear.

Nik the articulated design will be like a hagglunds. (or payloader) FWIW, not trying to be negative, I had a tucker, I am not a fan of the trundle design, in defense of the design I was grooming, and the constant dynamic loading of stiff hitching raised hell with the plates.

My tracks will be just like a tucker, (bigger sprockets)

Just go back to your video and couple two of those together and drive both sets of tracs. motor and trans in the rear unit. passengers and wet bar in the front unit....

If you get serious, I will swap some trouble shooting time towards parts.....

Mike

what does that have for an engine a big road oiler or an emd if its an emd remember they take a special high zinc oil

So in case of Hugglands, it is motor driven axles via shafts in both units, yet hydraulics control the steering, right?

the bv 206 has an engine with an automatic trans running to a transfer case at the back of the front car. a drive shaft runs down the front chassis tube to the front differential ,and trough the coupler to the diff on the rear car. the t-case has a 2 speed shifter and should be in low range when operating on rough or soft ground. steering is accomplished by a front crank pto driven pump with 2 double acting cylinders in the rear. the weakness is in pitch and roll conditions these rigs beat you up because of how the movement of the front affects the rear and visa versa.

So what would stop me from building a similar setup with 2 of the weasel diffs...:clap::clap:

building a articulated machine with a brake controll differential would be a waste of a differential because you dont need the brake to turn just the articulation betwen front and rear.

a locked or a differential that could be locked is all you need most all of the older tuckers are not locked differentials

Don, it has a Big bore V-8 cummins with a allison 6 speed air shift tranny like the big mine trucks (CLT5860-4)

Ah, thats where I kinda messed up...

So technically an open diff type axle like dana40/60/80, etc, would work just fine in a setup like that... no need for brake steer..

with articulated steer though, we are talking about a pretty WIDE turn on those, ha?

not really depends on distance betwen units, length of the front and rear unit and how tight you bring the corners of the front and rear together
the Hagglunds can turn pretty tight they are only 6 feet wide
