Homeless man grateful for boots, but barefoot again

Jim_S

Gone But Not Forgotten
The homeless man who was photographed being given a pair of boots by a New York City police officer in Times Square on a bitterly cold night last month was spotted on the Upper West Side on Sunday. And he was once again barefoot.

"Those shoes are hidden," Jeffrey Hillman, the 54-year-old homeless man, told the New York Times. "They are worth a lot of money—I could lose my life."

Sadly he is correct. Some low life would do that to get his boots and sell them for another fix. My neighbors son was knocked out cold for his Nikes.

There was a story over the weekend that his family saw him on TV and contacted him. Must be that he like so many want to remain free birds and not have any structure in their lives.

I ran a restaurant in Philly in the early 90's. Family members would come by the store with pics looking for their family members. They would also leave their numbers and we would call them if their street person showed up. But the street guys always got away and back on the street. It was sad for the families but the street people could be very irritating and stunk up the shop. I had one particularly smart and not as irritating as most tell me I was crazy, going to work, doing what they tell you, and kinda on and on, but he just did not want any sort of rules.

i know from a woman that worked w/ this population that many were afflicted by psychosis. to them, they preferred this way of being. they'd get them into places to stay, jobs, a semblance of stability, yet many returned to the thier old ways.

You had to be a blind man not to see that coming.:sad::sad:

I think the officer's kindness is not in question. People are sad that a person can either fall through the system, or simply not want to be helped. Of course you know here in the UK we have a problem. Life can throw rubbish at any of us and it is a case of there but for the grace of God go I.

CRISIS at Christmas is a great charity we have here, so at least once a year we in the UK do a lot for the homeless. However some simply are too isolated and refuse help.

A link about CRISIS for people outside to UK to see what fantastic work they do.

i've seen this, here, too. there was an undercover bust on a few 'needy' ppl nearby years ago. merely takes a glimpse to see if they're merely greedy 'er actually needy.
i shall keep the officer's kindness in mind. he gave. that matters. Bless the Man.
i differentiate between need/greed often. they scatter themselves here- 'oft amongst the richest sections. the actual needy- they know where to shake change cups & where not to.

PF you living in a city must see more than i do...

We have a guy that is well known in our town living on the streets,it was only some years back i got the truth on how he ended there,he was happily married and his wife fucked off,he worked for BAE in a high profile job and just broke...his mental break down caused him time off work and in the end they fired him,i know this from one of his ex co workers and i am told he has a genius mind but the stress of losing his wife just broke him.

My wife works at the local shop and like others that work there give him free close to out of date produce and his manners are second to none, but he in no way will take cash from anyone he does have a level of self respect.

How a man that was some years back designing weapons systems can end up like this is far from my understanding, mental health is for sure a issue, and lets just hope the kindness of passers by continues as not all on the streets are bad they are honestly in need of help mentally and sometimes physically.

It is so sad. It can happen to anyone. They can lose their job or get into debt, be made homeless, anything in this present economic climate can tip a person over the edge. People apparently coming out the military are prone to being homeless. Well, in fact there are so many reasons. It is so easy to look down our nose at people like this but what do we know of what they have been through. I think charities do a wonderful job.

Again, having said the above you have maybe heard of those who sit on the sidewalk outside a supermarket or bank, perhaps with a dog, and beg, and yet they have a home to go to.

I just am so grateful to have a warm home and enough money to spend on food and necessities. I suppose we take that for granted at times don't we?

i've posted this pic before, & i'll post this afternoon again. this guy was 1 of the ppl we may soon be. the economy is not great. fer the vast, vast majority.
that aside, i'll compare him to me (most of us, now)- him- weatherbeaten/ruddy- me/sunscreen & shelter; me/pillow @ night- 1 of 3 rooms of my choice to snooze in- him, concrete & a pillow. me- groceries placed aside 4 the pix. him- someone gave him a beverage. me- a cup of change on 1 of my desks that i find in my purses. him- a disposable cup he humbly keeps there in case a passer-by may toss change his way. need i continue~
