Re: Cold Weather Survival (survival kits)

I'm interested in the expert advice on this as well. I try to keep such in my truck and SUV. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to have something of the sort in the everyday drivers.

What do you guys have for a home survival kit? Since I'm in an area that is "overdue" for a major earthquake, I try to keep a nice home survival kit. What would you guys suggest for that? I'd like to have a fully stocked bunker like bczoom has, but I don't think I could get Mrs. Dargo to go for that. But, man, wouldn't that be cool!!

Re: Cold Weather Survival (survival kits)

Dargo,

Here's a start. Although I don't have the bunker fully stocked, this stuff can get there in quick time.

Three day emergency kit:

Adjust accordingly based on # of people. The "EA" implies 1 per person.

1 EA Gallon sized Water Container (to be filled upon receipt)
1 EA Wool Blanket
1 EA First Aid kit containing the following:
Band-aids
Antiseptic wipes
Sting relief pads
Alcohol sterile prep pads
Gauze pads
Antibiotic Ointment
Blistex
3 EA Meal replacement bars
6 EA Granola bars
1 EA Folding pocket knife (combo style)
1 EA Small battery operated radio
1 roll Toilet paper
1 pkg Bathing wipes
1 EA Pencil
1 pad Paper
1 EA Dust mask
1 pair Latex gloves
1 EA Survival kit in a 32 ounce bottle, with the following items
1 Whistle combo, with
1 Reflecting mirror
1 Water proof match case, with strike anywhere matches
1 Compass
1 Zip-Lock plastic bag
1 Plastic blanket
1 Flashlight (LED preferred)
1 Poncho

Personal items that you may want to add to this kit.
Favorite book or deck of cards
Personal hygiene products
2 changes of underwear
3 day supply of prescription medicines and/or additional first aid supplies
1 Zip-Lock bag with an amount of cash, in small denominations
Firearm

Re: Cold Weather Survival (survival kits)

Brian, If I may be so bold as to suggest that you may want to split the thread? I presume the list above is what you keep at home not in your vehicle.

The type of "basic" gear I would carry in my Snow Trac is very much the same as what someone would carry in their truck in the winter. However, what we keep in our rural homes is not going to fit into a box behind the seat of Dargo's pick up or under the seat of my Snow Trac. JMHO.

Either way is fine with me.
I didn't (still don't) know exactly where this thread is going.
Will it be a discussion of:
Cold weather survival techniques
Cold weather survival kit for car (or snow trac)
General survival kit
General "how to survive".

Re: Cold Weather Survival (survival kits)

Well I'm just guessing, but I think the intent is for a vehicle cold weather survival list, keyed in for remote Snow Cat type gear, but could be scaled back to an auto/truck survival kit.

These kits are commonly called a BOB, short for Bug Out Bag.
