We picked up a new rescue dog (mutt) on Saturday. She's a 1-year old labradoodle called Nikki. She's settled in well with our two older dogs (10 and 12) and even after a couple of days her personality has started assert itself. Luckily she doesn't seem to have any major "issues", just needs training, loving and reassurance as she seems to be very submissive . She doesn't seem to have been abused, just pretty much neglected and ignored.

The upside, as far as my wife is concerned, is that I have to exercise her and that stops me vegging out during the winter and I should be in great shape for spring start up.

I dont know if this is wrong or not but you mentioned issues. To see if a dog has "issues" I walk up and pick up the food dish while they are eating. If they growl then I have noticed issues with them later, and immediatly give the food back. If they just look at you they are usually pretty well tempered.

Nice pups! The other 2 look like they need exercise too!

Well, it's not as bad as it looks. The big black one is a 12-year old lab/chow cross and she's waiting to get her spring haircut. Her coat and "feathers" are pretty long right at the moment. Most of her life she's been right at 90 pounds. She's gained 3 pounds over the winter 'coz her rheumatism is getting bad and slowing her down. When she's had enough these days, she just flops and waits for the other one to stir up something interesting.

The red one is a 10-year old lab/red heeler mix that weighs 65 pounds. It's not her fault, she's just built kinda "square". Her weight has been steady for years too. She gets plenty of exercise as she only has two speeds, 40 mph and asleep. She's the one that runs the fences every morning to see what has passed through the place during the night. That usually takes her about 45 minutes to run and mark but that's been her job for years.

Mak2, I do the removal of the food bowl thing every night when I feed in the evening. So far there's been no reaction. She just sits down and looks up at her bowl. At least she's learning that "boss dog" giveth and "boss dog" can taketh away.

As I write this Nikki has only been here 3 days and her personality is starting to shine through. So far there are no major problems. She's doesn't understand any commands except she's getting better at "come" and "sit". She been so starved of human interaction that she likes to be real close to me or my wife most of the time which is fine because she is still on a long leash when she's out of her crate. She has a vet visit tomorrow morning so we'll find out if there are any major health problems.
