My old Dell tower compter that I use has failed. While using it, it simply blacked out. There seems to be no power to it or anything attached to it. The mouse light is not on.

The on off switch, a boutton was flashing dimmly. I opened the case and blew and vaccued it out, and it is no longer is flashing when I connect the power. I am thinking it is a power supply issue, and might be fixable. Isn't there a DC supply inside this thing??

At any rate I won't be posting as much untill I get this sorted out....

any help is appreciated!!

Regards, Kirk

Yeah, cooked the power supply, which should be (like anything else) a plug 'n play device. Time to call the Geek Squad.

If you don't already and it's not too late, try to back up everything every which way you can.

You can replace the power supply Kirk, it's not a big deal. Take it out and visit any computer supply store. They will give you one that fits. Simple, really.

Some Dell units use proprietary power supplies, especially the small form factor desktops. Our organization bought hundreds of desktops and 2 years later almost all of the power supplies crapped out.

But yes it sounds like a power supply issue

:agree: They really are not that hard to change out. Taking the old one in with you to the computer store will save you and extra trip as you need to see the size and the type of connections your current one has.

Thanks all...

I think I can do it myself...

It cannot be that hard. I know how to open the case, and the inverter, power suppl must be the piece the cord plugs into.

My project for the evening....

Good advise, the # and style of connectors are important as "old" may need adapters to match newer stuff in your box.

Worst case a new larger case power supply can sit on the table outside the box & simply run the wires in and connect up.

When my 250W power supply was flaky I put in a 430W replacement.

Ok,

Its open and I have a 400 watt supply, with multiple bundles of wires terminating in plug ins with conectors on the end. must be 30 wires total.

Can I tell the store the information and specs on the old one, get the new and have it here, to change out like a distributor cap and wires. I would feel more comfortable with this approach than to just pull it now and try to rember later....

Sounds like what happened to my old HP.
The power wouldn't come on, the switch stuck inside the tower after I pushed it 3 times that night.
Looking back, I should have taken it in to get repaired, instead of being stuck with Windows Vista on this one lol

You will find that almost all those plugs are foolproofed by having a unique shape and or different pin configurations. You can always take masking or freezer tape and makes some # tags to stick on them. Make a sketch as you go.

Check, test....

Yup for $25 for a newer but used power supply and it's good to go. A new heart.
