Help. I need some tree seedlings within 2 weeks

I haven't been reading ahead enough in my Cub Scout handbook (I know, what a bad leader I am...), but for our next meeting, March 8th, we're doing the "Taking Care of your Planet" achievement.

One of the requirements is for the Scouts to plant a tree.

So, I need to find some seedlings for the boys. It's too late to order from a County co-op. I did just e-mail a local nursery to see what they may have available this time of year and hope to hear back from them tomorrow.

Anyone have an idea/source for some seedlings this time of year that are reasonably priced? I'm thinking of Blue Spruce but open to suggestions.

I only need 15 trees. I believe a lot of places have a minimum order of 50 or more but since the parents don't know we're doing this, I don't want the boys to go home with several trees each and then have the parents try to deal with having to plant all of them in their yard.

Arbor day foundation may be able to help you out. Short notice and bad time of year for this project. They will be tough to keep alive in a heated home and most ground is too froze to allow planting and root growth. You may be able to hold them in a tub of potting soil in a cool dark area of your garage till conditions improve.

Bill - I think I looked at the arborday.com site but it was in haste (as I was in such a hurry) but their offerings weren't something I was going to jump on. IIRC, their site was "membership required" or something so I moved on.

BRG - Thanks! I contacted that person to see what they still have an if they can get it to me.

Re. being able to plant them now, I'll have to go do a little digging (literally) but we had a seriously nice melt off (down to grass until yesterday) so we may be able to get them in the ground. If not, I may just make it a den project for that night to get them into a pot that night and keep indoors until planting season. The church will love me for this one... bringing in dirt and such. I'm not sure they've gotten over me doing carving of soap bars from our last meeting and I couldn't find a vacuum to clean up leftover shavings (although 95% of the shavings were captured and discarded because we laid tarps down).

That C/L post was still up as of yesterday...I wish you the best.. if they send you a list could you maybe post it..Wonder what kind of fruit trees they have..B,

Will do.

On a side (personal, not related to Scouts), I'm interested in some fruit trees myself but would like to get ones that are much more established and could produce fruit in a couple years after planting.

Thanks Dave.
It's about 150 miles round trip. Considering my truck and gas prices, mailing would be a more cost-effective solution.
I'm keeping a window open for their site and will browse more tomorrow, but it appears their minimum order (at least for the Blue Spruce) is 250 trees for $150 + $30 in shipping

I'd give them a call. A lot of times companies will help out where they can with a situation like yours.

Thanks again everyone for your thoughts here as well as what was sent in PM's.

A couple updates.
I heard back from the Craigslist seller that BRGTold mentioned. Seems like a nice guy and is more then willing to work with me, but he can't make the 3/8 date. His trees are frozen in the ground and can't be dug up yet.

I heard back from the local nursery. They're checking to see what they can do.

I have windows open for all other suggested locations and will contact them later today (after I hear back from the local nursery).

Great memory you have there!!!

I did my meeting today and explained that the trees are still frozen in the ground so I asked they work out a place with their parents and I'll get them once the weather warms up.

I'll look again before ordering but due to the small quantity needed, I'm probably going to go with the guy on the Craigslist ad as he made me a nice deal.

That's the guy I'm thinking of ordering from.

One of the other leaders got something for getting trees from the county (or state?) for free trees. If we can go that route, we'll take it. Otherwise, I'm probably going with the guy from Irwin.

Well go plant a bunch of pinecones, they are seeds, may take a bit to see your efforts, but it will be the same thing.... And they are all over the place!

Just a thought

The best and fastest growing trees always come up on their own around here. I have had pretty good luck transplanting them with the backhoe. The wife wants some more elm trees dug up this year and planted out in front of the house to block my view.:hammer: I should never have planted that 22 ft. maple in the dog run for her.:whistling:
