heat exchanger in oc12 cover

the cover on the rear end of my 78 spryte has a "box" on top of it with 2 hydraulic fittings on the front of it. i opened up the cover to check the brake bands and found that the cover has a heat exchanger in it. there are 3 coils of 1/2" copper tube each with about 4 to 6 coils.
not sure what it is for. anybody want to trade for a normal cover?
