Haying for 2012 is done !

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
Finished up the last of the haying last night . I did pretty well but hay production was way off for most ranches this year . I sold all of my hay before it was even cut .

Its nice to be finally getting caught up around here .

Good to hear somebody had a good year. We are still sweating whether we will even get a second cutting around here.

first cutting here was great. Second cutting sucked great big donkey. There is time for a third, but almost never get one between weather and such.

Hay is going to be high priced this winter, here anyway. Small squares are bringing about $8 -$10 bail for good grass hay. Alfalfa is nearer to $15 for small squares. Large rounds are in the $160-$220 depending on the hay. It's going to be an interesting year, untill next summer....

Regards, Kirk

I got royally f*cked on my hay this year. The hot March gave a great start to the hay, but then April had three weeks of frost which pretty much killed it flat. Finally got first cutting in late June just in time for the drought to set in full strength. We've had enough rain in the last three weeks that it looks like I will finally be able to get a second cutting in a week or two. Keeping my finger crossed that I can get a third cutting in late Sept or early Oct.

My neighbor just sold two 48 ft.box trailer loads for $3 a bale. Think it was going to Indiana somewhere.

It was either the crappiest hay ever, or he got robbed.
Going rate around here is $2-3 for small square and $20-25 for a 5X5 round bale. Good Alfalfa baleage wrapped will bring $30. I should start baling small squares again. I got $20 for my inside stored round bales this spring. This is top quality hay that is a mix of alfalfa and clover with some orchard grass.

If you know someone that will deliver rounds with a $20-$25 base price to northern IL, let me know because I would love to buy 50 or 60 of them.

Little bit late Dave. Carpenter who owns 7 farms in the valley behind my place just sold 1650 bales 2 weeks ago. They also sold all their Hereford cattle. Don't know what is up with that unless they are planning to buy some more farms.

S-I-L said they were supposed to get their 3rd cutting yesterday. Don't know yet if it happened or not 'coz it's supposed to rain all this week. Not a big rain, just enough sprinkles to keep it hot and muggy. Nasty.

Big round bales of coastal are selling for $50-$60 around here, they were $150 last year if you could find any, but I have seen them as low as $35 and there is a lot of it. After last year everybody has been cutting hay like crazy.

Just finished baling second cutting. Considering the lack of rain and heat we had in June and early August I don't think this cutting was all that bad. We got abut 750 small squares (50 lb) off almost 10 acres.

Hay at Litchfield auction went for $230/ton, delivery extra. Guys are holding back the good stuff for $260/300 ton.

Horse hay small bales are up to $8.

Horse habitat charities are getting calls from as far away as PA, people cannot afford to feed their animals. She is full with 34 more on a waiting list.

This is a pretty avg year with 6t/ac 1st cut, 3t/ac 2nd cut, & 1-2t on a third cut if any.
