Hay Season

BigAl

Gone But Not Forgotten
Finally starting cutting yesterday . Got to send the wife to the JD dealer to get some wear parts that I need to finish up . Hay prices have exploded around here . $275 a ton . Last year I sold at $70 .

This is my last year for haying . I will be selling all my equipment at the end of this season . I am to old and tired and its just not fun anymore playing "Gentleman farmer" .The Elk and Deer can have it all next year .

In fact I have actually started to advertize the place for sale . It will have to be to some couple or group from outside the area that buys the old ranch . Nobody in our area has the $$$ or wants to own a ranch this size . I think our best bet is a semi retired couple who wants the Rural outdoor life and to have a steady income from the business in town too .

Al, that's an incredible price for hay. It must be weather related. Last year, around here, big round bales were basically selling for $35 to $50 a bale. The way they've been cutting hay this year I don't expect it to be any higher.

I wish you luck selling the place. Selling ranch/farm land is a hit or miss proposition around here. It can be on the market for a long, long time or the right person can walk through the door and it's gone in weeks. Fingers crossed for you mate.

I too think it must be a weather related regional thing. Around here, first cut yielded around 20-30% higher than last year so prices should be the same if not lower.

If you sell the ranch, where are you going to be? NH, Panama?

How many acres is your place? Hay prices are still fluctuating around here. Wrapped green baleage is fetching $45 a bale. Dry round bales around $30. Nice small squares are anywhere from $2.50 -4.00 a bale. There is a lot of hay waiting to cut from all the rain we have had. The clover we cut early for baleage is coming back real nice. Don't know if we can salvage the stuff behind the house or not. We need dry breezy weather and have been getting more rain.:hammer:
