member formerly known as dds
well I found out my replacement companion Boss Dog is gun shy our little lap dog could care less. Boss Dog is a lab mix I intend him to be a hunting dog I have to break him of his fear of firing guns. any suggestions? I don't want to f up and ruin him for hunting for life.

forgot pics he is still a bit hyper, so it's hard to get him to stay still for pics. here is one of him swimming he loves the water

that would be on the upper casadepaga we have lots of places like that around here look forward to part 1 of a snow trac salvage from iron creek next summer.

Our dog is gun shy, I haven't had the patience to try and break him. He's not a hunting dog so I just let him run and hide when I'm shooting.

"Apparently" you should gradually introduce the noise with a cap gun at feeding time and reward him with treats when the guns are out. I just never wanted to spend the time each day dealing with the neurotic dog. It kind of annoys me when a 100 lb lab/pit mix gets all scared and wimpy just because of a little noise. ;)

Boss doesn't like gun shots but when the city sounds the noon siren he will sit and howl in tune with it.

Hate to say it, but once a dog goes gun shy, it's terribly hard to overcome the condition. Dang.

I'm willing to try he isn't as dumb as he acts sometimes just young still. he house broke real easy and liquid will run out his ears before he pisses in the house now he still has some chewing and domination issues to work out. the worst trait is his barking through the glass every one thinks he is vicious when all he wants is for some one to let him loose and play. on the other hand I could leave my whole gun collection in the cab of the truck with him and no one would attempt to steal it as things are now

Don he is still young and dumb so to say. Keep him away from gunshots till he is at least 2 years old. Then the only gun shots he should hear should be while hunting, and hopefully a critter to fetch. My dogs don't like it when I practice shooting, so I let them in the shop before I start. It is quiet enogh in there they don't seem to mind.

But when hunting they could care less of a shot rings out. They know there is a reason to shoot, and they know why.

Don't ruin a young dog by forcing the issue. Wait till he is ready to hunt to do the shooting, and not a lot of shooting at that, just enough to put game on the table. He will get the idea.

Regards, Kirk

my house dog waits under trees for squirrels with I shoot a small rifle ,walks off when I limb trees with the 44 and hides when I pull out the chainsaw.
so I think it is the reward thing.

I believe Boss Dog has some real sensitive hearing he doesn't like it when I call him through the pa or use the siren on the truck. he however enjoys howling at the noon time air raid siren for some reason.
