Gail and I were off on a bday getaway last weekend at Greenbrier Resort in Southern WV. All I can say is WOW. This is where the secret bunker is that was to hold the President and Congress in event of WWIII. We took the tour and unfortunately no electronic devices allowed so no photos, but boy was it impressive. They truly thought of everything in so far as having the daily meds on hand for every member of congress, their staff and the President, Vice President and their staffs. Each month they checked and revised the meds as needed. When a member of congress changed they dropped the outgoing members meds and picked up the incoming members meds. The bunker was staffed 24x7 and one of the staff had to ensure key daily papers and magazines were in house every day just in case the worst happened. Mind boggling. This went on from 1962 to 1994 when the bunker was 'discovered' by a news reporter. The cost had to be phenomenal. And ...I suspect a similar place is in existence today 'just in case' something happens.
That was just 2 hours of our 4 day visit. The Greenbrier is top notch all the way. Extravagant to the max, and it costs accordingly but it is so worth it. Other highlights included elegant dining in the main dining hall, Jerry West's steakhouse seeing all his championship rings, being serenaded by the piano player, fun in the underground casino and kewl DJ dance party. Greenbrier also had a glass blowing demo on site and glassworks you could purchase. Nice. When we did go off the resort we saw a black bear up in a tree. We found some neat shops in Lewisburg. We also visited Beartown, but did not see any bears there and visited Droop mountain lookout. A fun weekend that will not be soon forgotten. Here are some pics from the getaway.
