Wondering what you guys do for running your snowcat on public ground ?
I have green stickers for my snowmoblies. My buddy down in Clovis doesn't use one. But he goes where there is many people with his snowcat.
Just don't want the hassle of getting a ticket for now have one.
California DMV doesn't have a listing for snowcats and my brother works for Pacific Gas and Electric and they don't have any type of green sticker or SE plate on their snowcats.

Oh boy. The green sticker discussion. The problem with the whole registration process is that some machines are simply un-registerable. So you ride black. . .and hope you don't get caught. I keep mine on my own property in CA so I'm not registering it anytime soon, not to mention I don't want it to turn into a lawn ornament for the USFS.

Here's the issue, or difficulty, with registration.

You need a bill of sale and the prior registration transfer and/or title. If it came from somewhere where it was unregistered, you're a bit screwed. Many snowcats didn't come with a title, such as mine, so I don't stand a chance of registering it as far as I know. I've been through this with a snowmobile before, and I was able to go to Bombardier and get a "certificate of origin" which I eventually pushed through the CA DMV as a title. But it was a tough process and they ask to bring the machine to their office. There's no way I can just bring an 11.5' wide snowcat to their office. First I'll get a ticket on the way, then I'll probably not get the registration approved. It'd just be a day of headaches.

There's a reason that the three snowcats (or snow OHVs, as we call them) in my valley are not registered.

If you operate the snowcat on USFS property, you will need a special use permit. I know the USFS here in Washington requires a specific need and a regular route. They don't charge for the permit here, but they do require liability insurance and specific lighting such as rear red lights and an amber rotating beacon light that can be seen 360 degrees around the cat. Lots of luck.

I well be in town tomorrow and well stop by the USFS main office and talk to them and find out what they require here in Calif.
DMV can be a big pain in the butt, but a green sticker would make everyone happy. :) :)
Well let you all know what I find out. :tiphat:

Stop by the USFS today, the guy I needed to talk to is on vacation till the first of the year. So left my phone number and hope to hear from him the first week of the new year.

In California a snowcat is just an OHV, and it requires a green sticker. The rules of operation are the same as a snowmobile as far as I know, even on USFS land.

There are two ways to get the green sticker.

The first way is via registration, requiring processing via DMV with a bill of sale and title.

The second way is to pretend you are from NV, and to go to a snowmobile shop and buy it for $45. The sticker is the same, as are the rights. The only difference is that you are now a NV resident who just visits the fine state of CA to run your OHV on USFS land.

I tried the CA Green Sticker OHV registration routine with my Tucker. I spent two trips at DMV in Auburn and finally gave up. They told me "this is not an ATV or snowmobile". They looked in reg and called others for help. They just didn't get it. I finally decided just to keep my money and move on.

I'd sure like to hear what the USFS has to say.

For most places I go it's private property but there are areas I might go where USFS might have a say in it.

Please keep up informed if you find anythig out.

Stopped by Command Center today, since I was at work and talked to USFS dispatcher (They're in the same center as we are, CDF) Her thought was a "use permit" would be all one needs since snowcat don't fall under the " green sticker " guidelines to operate on USFS land. My other question to her was, would the "use permit" be good on another forest. She wasn't sure about it and refered me to the main office in Eureka. Use Permits vary in price, some are just a few dollars, like for cutting fence poles. I'am going to call the Eureka office tomorrow and hope to talk to the guy in charge of land use. I have a feeling that one would have to get a "use permit" for each of the forest in California. So for me, it would be the Six Rivers Forest and Klamath Forest. Anyway, I well update as I find out more.
If I can get a use permit for a reasonable dollar amount, say in the twenty dollar range for the whole year, to me that would be better that dealing with DMV and having to pay sales tax on my cat. Would be around $ 700.00 and I can think of a whole lot of other stuff I'd could spend my money on. :tiphat:

Well I now have a OHV green sticker.
I talked to the forest service use permit office and was told that I needed a green sticker, so off to California DMV. At first they said that they don't green sticker, then I told them that the forest service said I needed one. So they call Sacramento DMV and the guy on that end said license it as a snowmoblie. O.K
showed them the bill of sale and their question was where was the title/orgin of manufactering. After explaning to them that it was a used piece of equipment and that I didn't have one, they required that I get a bond for the amount of the sale price. I had the snow cat with me, so I got them to do the vin check that day.
They also want a statement of facts from the seller. So got all of the above, except the bond and went to another DMV office and presented my paperwork and didn't mention anything about a bond. The lady asked for a orgin of Manufacter and I told her that it was used and not new. She looked over the paperwork and issued me a green sticker and I paid the taxes on the sale price and I'm happy and without getting a bond.
It all comes down to who you talk to and finding a DMV office that uses common sense.
Hope this of some help to those in California.
