Green Box Scraper

I went to the nearest (45 minutes away) Kubota dealer today to get my supplies for my 50 hr service. My dealer is 45 minutes away from Seattle (meaning a boat ride plus 45 minutes for me) and I thought I would lower myself and visit the nearer dealer (I have had bad experience with them in the past). Anyway, I got my supplies (minus the transmission fluid filter, my mistake) and thought I would look at their box scrapers. The salesman told me that they only had one on the lot and asked which tractor I owned. I told him a B7610 and that I was looking for a 60" scraper. He said that that was too large and that my tractor could only handle a 48" (which I am almost positive is BS). He then showed me a green box scraper (the brand could have been Gavin?) which looked to be a medium duty 48" scraper. I asked how much and he said that it was $900! I asked if he sold any other brands, and while he couldn't remember which ones they were, he said they were more expensive! I just shook my head and left.
My experience with this dealer has been negative in the past (another story) and I have had several other people tell me that they don't care for them either. Oh, by the way, their charge for a 50 hr service is $375 plus parts.

What do you guys think?

I have heavy clay and I can tell you that my 24hp tractor can not handle a 60" box blade. I have a 48 and a 60 so I know of what I speak. Now if I had sand it might work fine. But with heavy soil a 48" box blade is going to the the maximum for a 7610.

As for the price, different brands and different dealers charge different prices but I'd suggest you look for a Midwest 48" "20" series blade, should be about $500. In the same price range, take a look at Buhler/Farm King, it is a good design (not great, but good) and is also a modest price brand. If you want a super heavy type blade, consider the Midwest "30" series, Woods, or Gannon blades, they will cost more but in a 48" size I'd be shocked if any of them hit $900.

EDIT: Here are photos of a Midwest (blue blade) and a Buhler (red blade). But I'd probably buy PB's blade for $350!!!

Bone - you sure you don't want my King Kutter 48" Box Blade - I was thinking of selling it for $350 but I haven't done my price checking. The drive down here isn't too bad. You can spend the night and my wife and I promise not too offend your liberal beliefs too much.. I'll take you out shooting too (Imagine, a Canadian having to take an American out shooting - who would have thunk it?).

It's going soon! I just sold my first thing on Craigslist and I think I have the liquidation bug! Time to sell off all the unused junk I have lying around!

PB

PB, thanks for the offer. Box blade, shooting, and an overnight stay with some conservatives. Sounds like a tour with the Peace Corps!:D

My duty captain just bought a B21 from one of the medics along with several attachments, including a box scraper. He already has a box scraper and I asked him if he wanted to sell the other one. I am waiting to hear from him (he is supposed to be back on duty with me on Saturday). Don't wait for me though if you can sell it sooner.

Bob, thanks for the advice. You're pretty knowledgable for a guy like you! I was looking at either the midwest (my dealer carries them) or possibly a Woods std duty. You have convinced me that 48" is the way to go. The dealer I went to today could have told me that rain comes from clouds and I wouldn't believe him.

BH,

How wide is your tractor at the outside points of the rear tires? It's normally a good idea to get a blade that's at least that wide.

My little 24HP JD runs a 6' box blade. It grunts when lifting and I sometimes have to use 4WD to pull nasty stuff but in general it works well. I do keep an eye out for a 5' for trading.

I'll have to get back to you tomorrow on that one. It's raining outside (surprise!) and the tractor is under the tarp.

By the way, here is the Buhler site: Box Scraper It looks like they only come in a 5', 6', and 7' model. No 48" model.

P.S. Have you guys ever heard of Gavin or Garvin box scraper? No luck googling it.

I don't know Bob. Honestly, it is a long ass drive down here from where Bone is (whatever that island west of Seattle is called).

I'd promise to be nice to him. I think he might even find us to be nice people. He can spoon up next to me all night! :gay:

Or share the couch with my Dog Spud (pictured below). He's 100 pounds of brown fuzzy love!:D

One quick glance and I can see that Spud is already having a dream about spending the night with the Bonehead..... :pat:  :yum: :yum:

Jay,

I may be nuts but I have a 72" Woods on the back of my L3130 HST. . Works ok so far... I figure if there is too much weight I can always make the dig less agressively. Maybe I am wrong, but seems like it should be do-able. And as Brian said, I was more worred about the box being as wide as the tractor. With the way I have my wheels set, I have them all the way out to 73". Front bucket is 72".

If you go on the Woods web site and look at what the box scrappers are rated for (HP) wise it might be more helpful. BTW, rumor has it that Woods is how offering their box scrappers in Kubota Orange. I think I paid around $600 for the 72" Standard Duty. The other brand that my Kubota dealer had was BushHog. I just didn't care for the way it was built compared to the Woods.

ps. I just check.. and mine is a Standard Duty.. not Medium.

checking the Woods website it looks like they make a 48" box for sub CUTs... up to 25HP. This is the smallest they make. I believe that if you more then 25HP, it will destroy this thing. Pretty sure your tractor is considered at CUT and NOT a SCUT.

Then they make Standard duty models from 48 to 72. All are rated UP TO 45HP. Again... I think they mean.. if you are pulling it with more then 45HUP you can destroy it.

I would think a 60" would be just fine for your machine. I don't see why you just can't back off a little if you can't pull it in the most agreesive position. If the clay gets too hard, I figure you get drop down the scarifier teeth and break it up before you remove it with the box. perhaps I missed something?
Bob, can you explain what about the 60" makes it "too much" for your tractor? Is backing off not an option?

Jay,

its interesting you said "Medium Duty" and 48" in the same sentence. The smallest Medium Duty that Woods makes is a 72". Interesting.. don't you think?
